    Boy's first bow attempt.

Bought my oldest a Bear Apprentice 3 recently and he's been slinging arrows downrange consistently for the last few weeks. I cant seem to get him away from it. Trouble is, he just has some fiberglass target arrows and the last few mornings, he has been getting the itch to put something down. We have a ton of wild rabbits on our property and this morning he made contact. Trouble is, he just hit the front shoulder while the rabbit was cornering away and just injured it. I had to come in behind him and finish it off. He's pretty distraught right now only injuring it. I tried to explain to him that that's part of a hunters life and tried to turn it into a teaching opportunity. I guess its time to arm him with the proper arrows in order to make a clean kill. Hopefully he can be successful next time in order to calm his anxiety. Any thoughts on which arrows would be best for a 10 yr old. He has a 24" draw pulling about 35 lbs currently.

I can relate and it's just awesome to hear kids wanting to get into Archery. Good job dad!

Based on a 24" draw and 35lb draw weight, he is on the cusp of getting into an entry adult bow (26"+ draw & 40lb). Maybe upgrade him a bow before spending to much on something he will outgrow soon, just a thought.

I took my son to an Archery shop & got him fitted for a bow. I recommend just to go into any Archery shop and they will be more than willing to help set a kid up and measure their lengths for arrows or whatever. You can get his draw weight checked also. Good Luck.

Thats what I love about the Apprentice 3. It maxes out at 27" and 60 lbs. He should be good to go for a while. Yeah, we have Santa Fe Archery near the house. Need to take him over there this weekend and get him set up.

My son has a similar draw and pull, little bit lighter than your boy. He shoots Beman ICS Hunter Juniors.

Due to a shoulder injury I was shooting at 35# and I was using Carbon Express Thunderstorm 30-50 Arrows for killing small game.

              Beman ICS Juniors.

              Those "cornering" shots are tough.

Good lesson and congrats on getting him hooked.

That bow should be perfect for him for a while

He didn't shoot him with just a field tip did he?

Same thing I was wondering. Give him some "old" but sharp broad heads if he is gonna be shooting rabbits/armadillo's etc. Sounds like he really enjoys shooting, thats awesome.

Yes, he snuck out this morning. I really need to get him some small game tips. He's just been target practicing with the fiberglass practice arrows he has.

ICS juniors or the Gold tip Warrior are both good arrows; but the fiberglass will do the trick as well. Get him some good small game heads or small broadheads that are cut on contact and let him kill all the rabbits he wants.

For the fiberglass arrows you will need to get the tapered broadheads made for wood arrows if they do not have screw adapters on them already.

If it were me I would get the Warrior arrows and screw some good, small, cut on contact heads with a small game backer ring like these:
                      Small Game Adder Point
