    Blood trailing question

So many of you on TBH have dogs who trail blood and I was wondering if teaching the dog to do this had any effect on those that are normal pets. We are getting a puppy and it will mostly be a couch partner but I want to work with it to trail blood. My wife is concerned that this might cause the dog to be more aggressive or rambunctious ( as compared to what t normally would be). Any insight would be great.

Even some pet dogs need a job. Nose work is becoming a big deal among "pet parents" that need an outlet for their active dog.

That being said, don't set the bar too high for your pet. Keep your expectations low. You can train a pet dog in odor recognition or tracking, no problem. But he has to have the right drives to excel as a hunting dog.

Training a dog to trail blood will not make your dog aggressive. Most dogs can be taught to trail scent to some degree. Like Sika said, the dog has to have the inner drive to be a good tracker.

I totally agree with Sika and AntlerCollector. The little guy in my avatar has been doing his thing for about 10 years now. He is probably the most docile JRT I have ever been around. He loves critter blood. He is a couch buddy for sure for both my wife and me. He has never been anything but lovable to our grandchildren. He is all business when he gets on a trail though. He just loves to hunt.

I trained my wiener dog and he is an absolute beast when a deer is down! Once the deer is cleaned and put away he goes back to a lovable little pup!lol

I think any active dog needs a job. Blood trailing is a great activity for your pet.
