How to hunt turkey like a champion

Here's your chance to tell me, cuz I don't know jack. Will be hunting wooded property in Alabama mid-April. Will be using a pop-up and of course taking my bow. That leaves 60 days to learn how to call, how best to use decoys, and how close I should try to draw in a gobbler before he figures out the decoys are fakes.

    Aaaaaaaand go!

Pop Up, corn, decoys and a call. You'll be in business.

A pop-up, a couple of hen decoys and box call is all you need.

Oh...probably by the time he figures out your decoys are fake it will be to late. Set your decoys about 10-12 yards out.

When he hangs up, shut up. Wait for him to gobble, then answer him. Continue letting him gobble then answer. This helps bring an old gobbler out in the open sometimes.

As far as figuring out your decoys are fakes, I have had one jump on top of mine and try to breed without considering if she's fake or not! Wouldn't worry abut that.

Full camo, no popup, no decoys, no corn, locate turkeys flying up to roost the afternoon before, get out early and hoot to make sure they're still where you left em, set up, soft yelps purrs with a box call, have chalk with the call JIC, don't overcall and hope they have not finishing gobbling by mid April. Dont shoot Jakes. My bet is the last part is going to be your biggest problem. What county are you going to be in? Good luck.

Don't know the county exactly. 30 minutes north of Mobile, AL so either Mobile or Washington county.

I personally call a lot. If you listen to turkeys communicate in the woods they do so by calling and they do a lot of it. Sometimes you need to call to a lead hen to **** her off enough to bring the longbeard to you. That takes a lot of calling but is a lot of fun. Other times you need to yelp like a gobbler to get him to come fight you... while sometimes a little hen yelp will make him come charging at you. That's what makes turkey hunting lots of fun. Ray Eye does a good job of explaining this in his book Turkey Hunters Bible.

I give it at least 10 minutes between calls.

You just don't want to seem to anxious, You don't want him to think your decoy is that kinda girl if you know what I mean

Hunting easterns is a lot different than hunting Rios. In my experience, Rios are MUCH easier to fool and less wary than Easterns.
