Has anyone been in the Navy

My son tells me a couple days ago that he is going to talk to a Navy recruiter in the morning. He is wanting to finish this semester of college then go. I'll be going with him to see how it goes and what they have to offer. Any words of advise or questions to ask.

    Thanks in advance Wil

Yes, finish college and go in as an officer. Life on ship is a completely different beast for officers vs. Enlisted. Life's also completely different when you hit those liberty ports. I was in the Marine Corps and have done 2 tours on ship. All said and done, I think I have some 13 or 14 months at sea. I'd have to go look to make sure about the amount of time. But, I can tell you that I e had enough experience at that to know the ins and outs. I'm sure there are many TBHers who have way more time at sea than that can shed a little insight on the subject as well.

Well, college is not his thing but he is trying. He does have a job but he needs something more. He is a great young man but he tends to go the wrong route at times. I think the service would be a great opportunity for him. Myself was not in the military or was my dad or grandfather. So this is all new to me.

I was in the Navy and would suggest he join the Air Force. The career choices after would be a lot better I would think as they have more relevant schools. The food is much better in the Air Force as well.

The Coast Guard does a CSPI program that they send you to boot camp, then they pay you to go to college for 4 years, working one day a week at the recruiting office, then after you finish your college, you go to OCS (Officer Candidacy School) and go in as an O1. Seems like a good gig if you can get it.

                              This!

I filed a formal compliant after boot camp because the placement guy lied to get me in a program he needed to fill. My Navy experience was not good. It all depends on the command and leadership.
I wouldn't want to discourage a young man with heart to serve his country but he needs to be certain of what he wants to get out of the experience and be sure not to get sent to the fleet un-designated.
