    Alfalfa Question

I have a co-worker that owns a bit of land near Pittsburg, and is trying to manage the deer population, but is having the usual trouble with hogs, too. The question came up as to feeding cut alfalfa to the deer, in order to reduce the use of conventional corn feeders and try to eliminate as much attraction to the hogs as possible. The place is almost 600 acres, low fence, and they do have several food plots planted that the hogs don't seem to care about. Anyone have any experience feeding alfalfa to whitetail?

yes. they eat it out of hay feeders in some places. Some won't but I heard praying sugar water on it speeds them up getting used to it.

My deer are tearing it up! We have feed close to 80 bales since the end of October. One plus is it seems to lower our protein consumption a bit, while still being a healthy alternative.

We don't even mess with the hay feeders. We just toss it on the ground, and it will be gone in a couple nights. Our hogs haven't messed with it too much but we don't have many any more.

Dang Justin I can't believe you have fed that up that quick! We'll have to try and locate yall a more readily available source at that rate.

If you think they like it in the bales try having a field of it growing.

Thanks for the responses, gentlemen! I just showed the thread to my co-worker, it was a great help. I think they may try to grow some in addition to setting some cut alfalfa out.

I hunted an alfalfa field in Shackleford cnty when I was about 12-13 and there deer all over it. The deer would walk through the wheat field to get to the alfalfa field. My grandad feeds his deer outside of Kerrville alfalfa bales and they eat em up. Only problem is it is pretty dang expensive to feed

                    Our deer love it.

I have this coming back from Kansas right now.

Jason, keep me in mind if you find a better source.

If anyone wants to buy truckload lots (about 500 bales) of alfalfa I have a good source out of El Paso.

I would be all over that, but I don't know that I could store more than about 200 bales. I am on the hunt for some more though.
