Has anyone seen bump gates used on high fenced ranches where a shared road goes through the ranch? We're having trouble with the neighbors leaving the gate open. Thanks.

The problem is that it is a shared, common road that runs through the ranch. We have locks on the gate, but they are not locking the gate back when they go through it. Sometimes they don't even hook the chains back and the wind then blows the gate wide open.Originally posted by Jaspro View PostThat would take a hell of a post to support the gate.
I would think a change of locks and chain where they couldn't get through even by cutting would get thier attention.

1) electric gate
2) fence out the easment road. Is the easment along one of your perimeter fence lines?
FYI, we went throught this issue when we bought our place. We ended up fencing the easment road that was along a peremiter fence.

Does it take a good gate builder and a semi-coherent vehicle operator? Yep.
For those of you that have never used them, bump gate is probably not a good description...they are "push" gates...slide your bumper up to them, push till they get "going" and then punch it through as they swing...the cable tightens as they hit 90-100 degrees, they slow down, and gradually swing back to the closed position. Try to get aggressive and "bump" them and the gate goes to 120 degrees and the other half of the gate takes out your left rear quarter panel.

Charge'em for a couple dozen head of cattle, tell'em they are responsible for them getting out, then watch their faces? Some people have to be hit over the head (so to speak) before they wake up. Hit'em in the wallet where they will surely understand your situation. I really hate to be so harsh, it's just some people won't listen until it affects their lifestyles or bank accounts.

Is it one person leaving it open, or several different people or groups? Do you know who is leaving it open? If not, give each one a different lock and key. Then see which one is unlocked to determine who isn't closing the gate properly. Then go have a talk with them. I agree, charge them for lost game, or livestock if they don't quit leaving it open.
