im tempted to go with 400g insulation, rated up to 35 degrees plus with wool sock should be ok?

after a little more reading, 800g seems to be the way to go

I can't imagine you will need any insulation for elk in september. You should be walking enough that your feet won't get cold. Plus it won't be too cold there that time of year.

I use uninsulated boots year round. I would only go to insulated if hunting a stand in consistently below freezing temps.

I use to love my danner pronghorns. Until I bought my Lowas. If you will be walking miles each day I'd at least look at the high end danners if that's the brand you're set on.

The mountain assaults look good, but I have no personal experience with them

None of them...get a mountain boot

                        Salomon
                        Zamberlan
                        Lowa
                        Kenetrek
                        etc

DO NOT go cheap on boots. Nothing kills a hunting trip quicker than feet that quit.

The danner mountain assault looks similar to other mountain type hunting boots.
