Not trying to hijack.... I was going to ask the same thing but I want to keep my St. Augustine. Clovers have already started to sprout, should I go ahead and put out a pre-emergent soon since we've been having these April-like days so often?

This is hard red sand and it don't rain too often out there. If I don't go this route there are so dang many grass burs that the dogs won't go out and we are constantly tracking them into camp only to find them with bare feet later.

And I have to haul a mower out there every time we go and waist time mowing...

Between Preen and Roundup I kept it bare since this time last year and it has been much better

Brent - The outcome of a rain dance has a lot to do with timing. Same thing with grass and weed control.

4-6 oz of roundup in water will have a season long effect if sprayed in April - May.

You have to keep in mind that grasses and weeds germinate at different times with the soil temps and moisture and hours of daylight.

This is my reason for looking for a killer + pre-emergent. Ideally it would kill the few things that are growing now and then prevent anything that hasn't germinated yet from coming up.

Dimension covers both broadleaf weeds and grassy weeds. Put it out last fall for the first time. I purposely didn't put it on a section of the yard for a test. Needless to say, that section is COVERED in weeds now, and the rest of the yard is almost weed free. It works but you have to water it in. I used a hose end sprayer to put mine out.

If you want just dirt, find a friend who works in the oil field. Get some waste water from the injection pumps. It will kill anything it touches and it stays dead for a long time. A well on the back of our place sprayed out the top for a couple of hours 2 years ago. Still not a speck of green in the area it leaked.

Too late for them now. Pre-emergent put down now will work for the summer weeds not winter ones already up

You need a ground sterilizer not pre emergent

Edit: Maybe not. Missed the part about not wanting to kill the trees.

look for a product made by PBI Gordon called Barrier. it will do what you are needing. also roundup extended control in a quart concentrate is good (don't get the premixed there is not as much active ingredient) I am switching from the extended control to the barrier this year at the nursery to see how it compares. I know the extended control keeps the ground bare for at least 3 months. only problem is you have to spray the entire area for a complete control and reapply every 3-4 months or so.

Polaris, Krovar and Arsenal are all ground sterilants. At the right rate, they will give you a year with no vegetative growth. I would be very careful around trees though.
