Never seen rock work started at the top like that.
I started at the top to eliminate the clean up on the rock below from dropping mortar. It will stain the rock because it is manmade. I took this advice from the people who made the rock and they were right, if your mortar is mixed right it only takes a second or two for it to bond and not slide down

Is it a dry stack product or are you having to put mud in the spaces in between rocks?

It was supposed to be dry stack but i didn't like the look once we started so we are going back with grout bags and filling the gaps with mortar, it just looked unfinished. My wife has already finished filling in the gaps on a small section and I really liked it after that.

Got some more done yesterday ,will finish the front of the hearth today and fill in some of the bigger gaps with some smaller pieces of real sandstone. Then it's gonna be a lot of filling in with the mortar bags
