Frost free or non-frost free freezer

Guys and gals, I am about to purchase an upright freezer for meat storage. I have heard that the frost free freezers do not preserve the meat as long or as well due to them warming up to remove frost several times a day. Does anyone have any thoughts they could share on this?

I have a frost free freezer that is full of frost lol. It has never been frost free. Everything stays frozen all the time and the meat/fish stays good. Just dont buy one thinking freezer will stay frost free as it will probably disappoint.

I have had a frost free freezer for 20+ yrs and have never had a issue with this or the quality of the meat...I have had meat in the freezer for over a year ..

Same here! But I have had stuff stay good closer to 2 years (vacuum sealed; paper wrapped does not last as long as vacuum sealed). I'll never buy another freezer that is not frost free.

txhunter007, there is something wrong with your freezer! Either the door seal is compromised, or the frost free system is not working!

I have one of each. The frost free will burn meat faster and dry it out. Frost freezers will keep meat eatable 3x longer if needed.

In the summer I freeze 2 liter coke bottles and such to put in water coolers. The frost free will suck the water out of the bottles within a month or so they will be 1/3 empty. The old school frost freezer will stay the same level

That is weird. I wouldn't expect the moisture to be able to be drawn from the bottles like that.

Thanks everyone for the input. I vacuum seal most everything so that doesn't worry me too much. Has anyone else experiences the same issue with moisture being drawn out of bottles?

Yep and fish in ziploc bags will be like it's freeze dried in a frost free freezer. Give it a try yourself. Put a cup of water in a zip loc bag and put it in the freezer section of your refrigerator. Almost all modern fridge's are frost free... Leave it in there for a couple weeks, then take it out and examine it. IF there's any ice left in the bag, take it out and thaw it, pour it in the cup and see what you get.

Vacuum seal bags will resist this somewhat, but not completely.

I will have to check that out. I bet if a seal is bad it would be the bottom, thanks.

I prefer the non frost free over the frost free. Meat just especially fish seems to last longer and I'm guessing it uses less energy.

You guys have me leaning towards the non frost free now. I am fine with defrosting once or twice a year if it means my meat lasting longer.
