    Bow Issue??

I bought my girlfriend a new rest for Christmas from the local archery shop (where she bought her bow as well) and she took it in to have them install it. They took about 15 minutes to install it and sent her on her way. They didn't paper tune, is this normal? It seems like I have always paper tuned when changing out a rest. If it is normal to paper tune, should there be a charge for tuning or would that be part of buying the rest (and bow) from the archery shop? It wasn't a whole lot more but I could have definitely gotten the rest cheaper online but I got it from the archery shop for installation, etc.

More importantly, we finally shot this weekend and her groups were great but she is 3-4" right at 20 yards and there is no more adjustment on her sight (sight is all the way over). I'm thinking paper tuning could help this but not sure. If not, what other options are there to get her dialed in? If it makes a difference she is shooting a Mission Craze. She had a whisker biscuit on it and we put a QAD drop away on it. Thanks for the help.

Is the rest centered correctly? Maybe it's in too far. I'm guessing she is right handed.

She is right handed. I'm not sure if it is centered correctly, is there a way to tell for sure visually? That's why I'm thinking paper tuning may help as it should show what the arrow is doing and whether the rest is centered.

Just center the string down the limbs & see if the rest is centered with the string. That will get you pretty close. Will at least tell you if they have it even close right now.

Look at her grip and make sure she is anchored behind her ear every time. Also sounds like rest might need adjustment. Paper tuning here is not usually the answer.

Take it back to the shop. Have her ask questions and explain the issue.

Did she ever get a paper tune after buying it? I know a local shop that wants you to shoot it a bit before a paper tuning.

I don't think she ever had it paper tuned. When I asked her if they did it, she didn't know what I was talking about. I'll probably take it or go with her. If for no other reason so I can watch and learn something. The biggest issue is I'm out of room to move her sight.

Look up the bow manual. It will tell you where the starting center shot is. Most bows are 13/16. Make sure the arrow is level and through the center of burger hole. Build you a cheep rack out of PVC. Go get a roll of paper and paper tune it her self. Back up to 20 yards and group shoot it. Say 4 arrows. And just the draw wait just a little up and down. You will find a spot that the arrows have the best group. Now sight it in with sight and go have fun. This is a fast way that will get you where you need to be at 20 yards.

Now when she is ready to advance in tuning. You can read on French tuning. Walk back tuning. Rat on this sight has a great write up on walk back tuning. Find it and print it. If you reach a point where OCD is kicking in and you want to tune to a nat ***. Then we go into paper tuning bare shaft. Need a few years of shooting before that one. We can also look at dynamic reaction tuning. This one is also needing a few years of shooting first.

                  Good luck and have fun.
