    Need boat help

So I bought a boat on here a while back. Was told it came with a title and everything but come to find out after a long drawn out mess it doesn't. Bought it as a project boat so it wasn't too expensive but I'm a college kid so expensive is relative to the situation. Just trying to figure out how I can get a title on this boat so I can run it on the water. I have a little money saved up to put into it and make it a decent boat but don't want to do that if I can't find a reasonable way to get it on the water. Could I get an abandonment title or something? Thanks

I've heard that a few times. Feb. will be 5 months for me

Start with a call to TPWD. Can they do a bonded title? What type boat? They can run #'s and tell you if it's clear. There are even companies that can track down the owner info.

I've always heard that you "never buy a boat without a title" . I guess it all comes down to the previous seller on whether he can get a lost title for you. If not, try with the courthouse to apply for a lost title, I'm sure you'd need a ton of documentation on the previous owners, bills of sales, etc. If nothing else, see if they will give you the last known title holder's name and see if you can contact him. In the end, it may not be worth your while....depending on the boat, cost, etc.

Sorry, thats probably not what you wanted to hear...

Hopefully someone on here has a solution for ya.

You can always go the bonded title route. It's not too hard, just takes a bit to get everything together.

Me too so I bought a boat "with a title" Now the previous owner is saying we can't get the title transferred over to me because he doesn't have all the paperwork.

I would run the serial number first before spending any money on it.

That doesn't make any sense. What other paper work?

Is the current title in the sellers name? If so, that is a good place to start. They can file for a lost title and have one shipped to them, then get it on to you. If it was not you can try to contact the previous owner who the title is in, explain the situation and see if they will help you out.
Either way, if they do not have a paper title you will need form 143M.

You can find this out by running the boat numbers here

You can read about abandoned boat laws here

Go to the tpwd website and it's laid out what forms are needed. Basically you mail the forms via certified mail to the owner on record. They either send the forms back to you signed or it returns to you in the original envelope. Then you take to tpwd pay fees, bond etc.

you can go to tpwd and pay a couple dollars to get the current owners last address and try cold calling.. i had luck like this in the past just mailing them the duplicate title form and the mail address to me.
Once i got the title i mailed it with prepaid preadressed envelope to them they signed it over and i was done.

He owns a car lot too and it's in the car lots name. For whatever reason, can't get any good answer, he says he cannot get the title transferred to my name. Getting real tired of dealing with the whole thing. Anyone want to buy a boat real cheap? Lol
