    Tanning a cow hide

A coworker of mine purchased a steer from a local FFA auction. She is wanting to get the hide turned into a rug. Anyone know of a tannery around Houston that can do a cow hide, and about how much she could expect to pay.

Get it to North Texas Tannery, will be one of, if not, the cheapest option out there. $450

I was afraid it was going to be about that. She was thinking about $200. I told her I didn't think so.

Should be able to do it a lot cheaper if she does it at home. I think I'm at about $15-20 per deer hide at home. A steer shouldn't be too much.

I don't think she's the DIY type when it comes to a cow hide.

If you don't look like 1970's Arnold Schwarzenagger before a cowhide diy, you will after, probably have a bit of a German accent too.

I'm almost 50 and married, my days of doing stupid stuff to impress women are over.

And it will take 6 to 8 months for it to be done. He does nice work though!

Give quality fur dressing a call in Spring. I use them to tan all of my hides. Not sure on the $200.00 part

                      $450 is CHEAP!
The last time I got a quote for a cow hide, it was twice that.
$450 would be worth the time to drive it up there.

I doubt you'll find a tannery that won't laugh at you, if you offered them $200.

Unless she just has to have that exact hide, you can buy a full hide from Tandy leather for less than $300.

You can get them at Sam's, sometimes for $100.

You can find them at Canton also. Not sure of the price but i would think you could beat the 450 easily.
