Gunsmith Help - Remington Model 788

I have an old, completely stock Remington Model 788 in .308 Win. I would like to get it worked on...i.e. add a kick pad, stock refinish, trigger job, etc.

    Questions are...

    1. Where should I go to get this done around the Houston area? I don't mind driving a little if it's the right place. I live in Tomball...work on west side of Houston (Beltway & I-10).

    2. What work should I do to this rifle to make it a really good shooter? I would have to measure the barrel before I claimed to know how long it is. My dad bought this gun in 1972 I believe (give or take a few years).

    3. Ammo recommendations? I do not reload and have always shot Core-Lokt's out of everything I have. What grain would do best?

I haven't shot this gun in about 10 years...just been sitting. Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks!

Both good places to deal with. MG does a lot of custom gun work.

Pete Piper in Hempstead or Pitchford in Waller. Pitchford cut down a 788 6mm stock for me 2 years ago and has worked on a pre 64 7x57. Ive been happy

look at Boyd stocks they make nice laminated stocks and they very reasonable. you can get whatever recoil pad you want and tons of colors and finish options and the stocks are wayyyyy better than the crummy stocks Remington put on those guns. do that give it a good cleaning and go shoot it before you spend any real money on it.788 were good guns and they usually shot real good but don't sink a lot of money in it .it's still going to be a 788 and you'll never get your money back out of it.

The Remington 788 is an excellent rifle - especially compared to the current crop of economy rifles. Also, .308 Winchester is my favorite centerfire caliber. Nothing wrong with Remington Core lock ammo as long as it groups well in your rifle. I also like the Winchester SP ammo. I agree that generally the trigger could use some work in these rifles. I have a Savage 99 whose trigger feels like a cap gun compared to my ARs with match grade triggers. A suggestion would be for you to look at the Limbsaver Recoil Pads. There should be one out there that fits your rifle and might save you a few bucks. You can usually find them in stock at Academy or Cabelas.

              Good luck,

              Dave
