    2002 Dodge 5.9 versus 2004 4.7

Looking at a full size 2002 dodge ram 1500 with the 5.9 auto tranny 2wd vs. a 2004 dodge Dakota with the 4.7 and 5 speed and is a 4wd.
Ram has 91k miles and the Dakota has 68k miles.

    Not gonna tow anything.

I had a 2004 5.7 hemi and loved that truck. No issues other than rear end going out which was under warranty.

I wanna hear pros and cons of each of the drivetrains.

    Thanks!!

We had a 2000 Durango with the 4.7 and it was a joy to drive. I think we kept it through about 150k miles with no drive line issues but it was the wifes truck and was not 4x4.

My daughter has a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee that also has the 4.7. She has just over 100k miles and the only engine \ drive line issue we've had is an exhaust leak due to broken exhaust manifold bolts. A few google searches shows that the broken exhaust bolts is a fairly common issue with the motor in the Grand Cherokee body style.

My dad has a 1998 1500 with the 5.9 and its been great for him. I believe the 5.9 is the old school 360 which is a long stoke old school V8 and makes its torque in the lower RPM range. As an old guy I miss those old high torque low RPM engines.

How do you plan to use the truck? Will you be towing very often?
What about the 4x4? Does that add usable value to you?

      I appreciate the info.

No plan to tow. I do need a 4x4 for when I go hunting just in case I get stuck (got stuck this past year at Bastrop in the sugar sand but my old ramcharger got me out with ease.).

Dealer on the Dakota is not dropping the price so I may pass that one. Other dealer has a good price on the ram ($6900).

Ill keep you posted. Also looking at the Colorados.

      Thanks!

I've had Dodges with both engines and no issues from either.Myself,I'd take that 360 and put it in the Ramcharger.

        PS,Wasn't the Ramcharger for sale?

Yes it was. Actually will be selling it once I get a newer dodge.
