    New communication devise!

Beartooth is a hardware device that allows for off grid communication. Talk, text and location share without cell service or Wi-Fi. Beartooth pairs with both iOS and Android smartphone via Bluetooth and allows you to connect with all Beartooth users in range.

I don't know if many of you hunt in an area with no cell service like I do but this was pretty interesting to me.

I've tried using handheld radios GMRS operating in the 467 MHz range and can't reach across our whole property. This is Beartooth devise is supposed to reach up to 10 miles via text. It connects to your cell phone via Bluetooth and then you can talk or text direct to another Beartooth user or a group.

I just preordered a set of 4 and can't wait to give them a try. Figures crossed!

Please let me know if any of you have seen this or anything similar that works well in a hilly extremely thick wooded area?

Very interesting. This might work for a group if one person has cell coverage that can still communicate with the outside world if an emergency should happen. Or as a repeater should all parties be strung in a line where the message can be forwarded to the next in line. It wouldn't let one person communicate directly to the persons on opposite ends with both parties being out of range of each other. But would let the message be passed down the line by each receptor in that line.

Yeah we have limited cell coverage at our camp, where I have a cell booster amp, but nothing in the field. So we should be able to relay a message to the camp to get it out to the public if necessary.

I have no cell service, and use these. Highly recommend
Inexpensive, lightweight, off-grid connectivity with an easy-to-use interface for long-range communications up to 126 miles point-to-point.

I just wanted to give everyone an update on this Beartooth device.

First off they were 4 months late on delivering it and only let me know one month at a time as I emailed them to find out where it was.

I received them this week. Took them out and tried them today. They are not very user friendly for pairing to an iPhone but we finally got it done. First test I dropped my nephew off at the fence line on the west side of the property with his. Then I drove through about 40 yards of pines and into our food plot and stopped maybe 200 yards from him. Tried to make contact over and over and it became obvious we were no longer in contact. So I turned around and drove about half way back. Still no contact. When I got back within 50 yards of him we could make contact again.

              My opinion; worthless junk!

              I email the Beartooth people and this is their response;
Range is heavily dependent on terrain. We are sorry to hear Beartooth doesn't meet your needs in your environment.
You can return your Beartooth directly to the following address:
              Beartooth Radio INC
              Attn: Ellie Van Dyke (Returns)
              45 Discovery Drive
              Bozeman, MT 59718

So looks like I'm going to get a refund, but before I ever preordered these things I specifically asked them if they had tested them in a wooded environment. Their lame answer (I now realize) was, "we've tested them all around Bowman MT and we are getting distances up to 10 miles". I now realize that was a dodge to my question.

I hope I save someone some money and time.

Man that's disappointing about Beartooth. I thought about getting 2 units this spring but wasn't going to wait months to get them as I wanted them for turkey season. So I was liking them over goAntenna because of text and talk boosting capability. So now it looks like maybe only text if you get a goAntenna. So does anyone have any true field experience range on these? I don't see any mile distance listed on their website. Thanks

.243 Warning! Go onto Amazon and read all the negative comments about the Gotenna. They are reporting exactly the same thing I am for the Beartooth.

I thought that's what I was going to do but the reviews are saying if you're not in line of sight, you are not going to communicate.

Reminds me of those small handheld 2way radios we used on our lease prior to cell phones. They worked great as long as there weren't any hills or trees between you and the next person.

Ham license... cheap. And, portable hams have up to a 5 mile range.
I hope to get me and my son licensed in the next couple of years

                          Too bad.
Someone more tech savvy than me in OUR industry needs to be working on a system like this.
And while we're at it get it to sync up cell cameras where they otherwise don't work.

Cajun thanks for heads up. That won't work for me. Sorry you had to be the guinea pig. Your experience helped a lot of us out. Much appreciated

Yeah now if we could only come up with a good solution.
