    blood tracking dogs

I am looking for a puppy in the next year for hunting/mainly blood trailing deer etc.

I had a dachshund that was awesome but I was always worried he would get snake bit.

I am looking at a Catahoula leopard, blue lacy, or black mouth cur dog next.

I need a dog that is a pleaser, family friendly, has grit, determination, and a great nose. What are y'alls thoughts on the above breeds listed and any preference and why?

Any dog can get bit. Snake avoidance classes ? I have a JRT and he's a natural. No training whatsoever, but if you make them bleed, he will find them.

Grit and determination try a Jack Russell
for even more grit and determination try a Jagd Terrier !

Dont think you could go wrong with any of your three choices imo. Each breed has their own individual traits yet are all working dogs with high drive. That being said I love my catahoula... tough, gritty, very high drive, has done awesome her first two seasons trailing deer and is great with kids. She is a little high strung but seems to know when to calm down and take it easy with the kids. Had my BILs 2 month old baby over at the house and Delta wouldnt leave his side. Just chilled out and kept an eye on him.
One thing I would say before you get any of these breeds is have the time and room for them. They need alot of space to get out and run. Good luck on your search!

I used to have a Catahoula. Best dog I ever had. Hunt quail (no point), retrieve dove and ducks, sit with me while calling coyotes, lived in the yard, house, and pickup. Granted, a lot had to do with spending abundance of time with him. But, was very intolerant of other dogs.

I am a tad partial, all the breeds you listed above will fit your wants......... But don't throw out a JRT.

Of your choices I'd say Blue Lacy.

I'd say Jagd terrier if you could have any dog to trail with.

Thanks for the responses. Surprised with all the JRT love. They are great dogs but just not for me. No terrier dogs either like the Jagd terrier. Not a fan of the long wired hair

My decision may be easier based on location of acquiring one of the above. Anyone have any recommended breeders for they type of dog I am looking for? I don't want a breeder that is just a puppy mill but someone that has proven working dogs and has pride in them.

I have raised catahoulas since the 80's and I use my dachshund to blood trail. Mush easier to deal with than the others. All of the others have a lot of drive and energy so you will need to find a job for them the other 9 months of the year.

                        Good point TX Hoghunter

My Dad has cattle so the dog can get some work that way. Also would use it 'maybe' to squirrel hunt, coon hunt, and hog hunt. Basically every time I can get away from the city and get out in the country and roam. Which is going to be about 6 days out of month. Rest of time the dog will be confined to roam the backyard in a subdivision with occasional walk. My thinking is better than a kennel but maybe not...
