    Lighting options for shop

Looking for opinions on lights for a 40x60 shop.
It will mostly be used for vehicle/tractor/trailer storage, but want enough lighting to be able to comfortably work on stuff after dark.

Leaning towards LEDs, but open to any type.

What do you recommend and why?

    TIA

I used 4' LED lights and they seem to do the job well. My shop is 30'x40', I used six lights in the ceiling for main lighting, have two lights for a lean-to on one end of building and have two more that I am going to use above work bench area that will be lower than ones hanging from the ceiling. Ceiling lights are probably 12' from floor and seem to light it up well.

      Nothing wrong with LED.
If it was me, I would go with f bay fixtures.

        Led.
Good quality and you won't have to worry about bulbs....ever.

          LED.

I am a sales rep for electrical distribution. IMO you want to make sure that they are at least 5000k.

LED.I've got 2 shops I run.The older(8 years) old has florescent and the newer (2 years) has LED.The older shop is a dungeon compared to the new and it has twice as many fixtures.

Go with 6 lamp t5 f-bay. They are good lights and do not cost near as much as led. I am an electrical contractor and install lots of these.

Puts out a great amount of light

LED is the way to go if you are planning to spend any amount of time in there.

Prices on them are coming down rapidly.

If you don't want to spend the money initially, you can put in strip lighting for now, and LED bulbs when you're ready.

Unless your ceiling is pretty high, most of the high bay fixtures are going to have poor lighting distribution. They are designed for high ceilings (20-40' high). There are some low bay fixtures available, just be mindful of this when shopping for fixtures.

T5 mentioned above is indeed a good choice. They are a fluorescent, and put out a bunch of light. Prices on them might be slightly lower than LED.

Light color, also mentioned above makes a big difference in how lighting is perceived. 5,000k in LED is a good choice for a shop. I'd stick with 4,100-4,500 if you go with fluorescent. Lower color temperature (2,700k) is a very "warm" or yellow color. It goes from yellow, to white to blue *** the color temperature increases. 4-5,000k is more in the white headed toward blue part of the spectrum.

In the last couple of years, I am buying almost everything LED, and I buy a few million in fixtures every year. Nobody seems to want fluorescent anymore, unless there is a budget issue.

I still have not had to change 1 bulb, have spent hours on end in the shop.

                      Love these lights.

LED all the way. One reason that I haven't seen others mention is that you wont have to maintain the ballast going out all the time. And no matter the humidity, the lights will come on right away.

I recently put up 6 in my 30x30 shop. 4 foot led from Costco. $20 a piece. I did 4 down the middle of the shop, left a gap per say and did 2 over my work bench side forming a T.
They are linkable up to 4. I did 3 and 3 with some extension cords. These were all plug in. No hard wire to mess with.

                              Lighting options for shop

Would these be a good choice?
                              If so, how many?
Would 1 light cover a 20x20 area good enough?
Enclosed area of shop is 40x60, so 6 lights would each cover a 20x20 area.
Is that adequate or would I need more?

I have a 10x30 area earmarked for workbench and tool storage area that will get additional lighting.

I want good light, but don't want to pay for unnecessary light either.
