    $100

But it also depends on how much the store had paid for the clothes that the women purchased for $70

It doesn't matter that the same person purchased murchandise. It was a normal transaction.

      It's just $100.

Do the same problem and have ANOTHER person come in with another $100 bill and buy $70 worth of murchandise... How much money was stolen?

      It's still $100.
She gave them the $100 back. She left with merchandise and $30.

Even if the merchandise cost only $10, the store still lost $70 in merchandise value and the $30 left to make up the $100 that was stolen. The later transaction is irrelevant to the store losing $100 out of the register.

                A hundred dollars.
She took 30 dollars and the mechandise that another person would have also bought for 70.It doesn't matter what the store paid for the merchandise.

How much money does the thief still owe the store?

I'm sure glad 90% of you guys aren't my accountant. They lost $100.00....period. Nothing else matters.

Register the thief stole $100 from is going to be short at then end of the day. The register where the thief bought and paid for merchandise and got cash back will be correct when it closes out.

She owes them $100, but her theft didn't actually cost them that much.

This is why accounting is an art and not a science. It all depends on which method of counting you are using.

                              We're both right.

But it will only be correct because the owner doesn't know ( but we do ) that the $100 bill was theirs to begin with. The question was " How much did they lose ", not if they knew they lost.........
