    Artifact finds!

NW Coryell county, all surface finds. Two hammerstones of materials not common to my lease. Two small tools with fine flakes along their edge. Three rough bifaces, and something that looks like it could be a spoke shave type of tool.

I find lots of rough bifaces on this deer lease and a few broken points. I'm only able to pick up surface finds but in six years of very casual looking I have more than a shoebox full of stuff.

Here is one I found on my lease between Junction and Menard, looks like a scraper. I picked it up because of the banding in the rock and was going to knapp it into a scraper, guess someone beat me to it.

Which ones? I'll try and explain why and get better pictures of what makes me think they are tools.
The last picture shows the zig zag, and smaller flakes taken of the front edge. That type of flake scars doesn't happen naturally they are from a person modifying that piece. Here is a picture of a piece of glass I was working that also shows a similar zig zag pattern.

Apparently I've been passing up a lot of artifacts. Those look like plan rocks to me. Not saying that they are not, just that I don't know what I'm looking at.

I can definitely see several tools in the things you've laid out. It would be extra cool to see some of the other things you've collected in your shoe box.

You absolutely have a camp or two on your place. Is there any live water there?

The head waters of Coryell Creek are just a little north and it runs right through the middle of this place. Has water in it 85-95% of the time.

Here is an explanation of "Hammerstones". They are the rocks used to strike the chert and knock off flakes. A lot of them are types of quartzite and have a little texture, fairly hard but not like Granite. They need to be strong but yet have some "give". If you find roundish rocks double fit size and smaller that don't look like they belong in your area take a double look at it. Here is the hammerstones up close showing some wear on the ends and sides.

Then here is one that I picked up that had a prominent pointed end, great for striking small platforms(where you hit the chert) with no wear of any kind on it. The wear on it now is totally from me so it is a good example to "prove" what I'm saying about the found hammerstones.

Ok, any time you find chert with any kind of a zig zag, big or small, it probably been worked by humans. Look close at this flake(medium to small piece knocked off a bigger piece), there is tiny zig zag chips or flakes along the edge. It also fits well in the hand, my guess is a simple knife.

Same here, see the small flakes taken from the edge? This would have been a small scraper or knife.

It was made on a flake and you can still see the bulb of percussion(semi domed area).

Here is a modern flake that I took off a spall(bigger piece) and you can really see the Bulb and the platform(angled spot where you hit the piece to remove a flake). The platform is to the bottom right, close to a 45 degree angle, that is where I hit it.

I'd like to! It has four or five different qualities of chert on it and more than I could Knapp in a life time!
