    How to handle delicate situation?

Part of me is uneasy about discussing this on a forum, but I'm unsure of what would be the best approach.

My neighbor is in her 80's and lives alone. Her property is surrounded by tall wrought iron fencing. Lots of trees and shrubs dot the back. This made it easy for the thieves ,who broke into and stole her pickup from the back driveway, from being seen a number of years back. She finally got over that, but is still uneasy these days, because of other trespassers who arrived late one night that I observed. I've always tried to look out for her.

Keep in mind that as mentioned before, she's in her 80's and is what I'd call fragile. Last night was the third night that I've heard someone walking around in the back of her place. If I call and tell her about it, she might have a heart attack . If the police come rushing out, it's going to frighten her badly.

So far, we don't think this mystery person walking about has done anything. I haven't been able to actually see them because of the trees and shrubs. NV or thermal vision would sure be helpful. If anyone tried to catch whoever it is, they have an easy escape route through the very back. I'm hoping this person could be apprehended without the lady knowing. I do not want to do anything to frighten her further. That's the sole reason I haven't done anything.

Place a couple well hidden game cams and hopefully you will get a face you or the police will recognize

Trail cameras. Motion senor lights. And my favorite trip wire so they stumble and fall after entering said yard. Dig a hole in the path cover it and wait!

What would you feel like if something happen to her and you did not call the cops? Help her clean up the place and put up motion security lights

There's psychological damage versus possible material and physical harm at stake here. Would suggest getting police involved, along with giving them background on the situation.

My thoughts exactly. Also, adding the motion lights are cheap. Talk it over with her. She will be happy as can be with you taking her six.

Motion activated sprinklers work pretty well.

Really???? Call the police, today!!!! As in right now. After 80 years she has been through a hell of a lot more than you think. Call the police, get it out there and solve the problem.

Where are you located? Maybe other members can help you catch them.

I would talk to her about it, face to face. You know the situation and her better than I, but you might approach it by talking about the issues you have had, and suggest some ideas to harden her security - lighting, trimming bushes, etc. because you are concerned for her. In the meantime, contact the police and let them know what you know. Maybe they can increase patrols or something else, and even make further suggestions for her security.

Yes, why would you NOT call the police? She would be more comforted knowing they are checking on her
