    Coast Duck Hunting Tips

Looking for tips for duck hunting the coast? I'll be hunting around matagorda. I've heard you need a lot of decoys but was curious if anyone else had any kind of advise for me. Thanks for the help!

Don't need a bunch of decoys. Maybe 4 dozen. Look for fresh water pot holes. Also, watch out for gators and snakes! Especially rattle snakes!

      1. Wear a life jacket. Coastal weather can change in a heartbeat and capsizing a boat, with waders and no life jacket, is a death sentence.

      2. Be mindful when taking a dog. The oyster reefs can do a number to your pup's pads (typically resulting in an emergency trip to the vet).

      3. 3-4 dozen decoys is fine. If you are shooting redheads, they will decoy into a couple dozen beer cans floating in the water (they're not real smart).

      4. If you don't bring a dog, check the footing in the area you are hunting. Sometimes the mud can be brutal and chasing ducks in deep mud can be exhausting.

      5. Take some solvent/anti-rust with you and treat your gun each night you get home (and leave it out of your case to dry). Saltwater can do a number to guns, so don't let it sit in a wet case overnight.

      6. I prefer to hunt while sitting on a stool on a shoreline versus trying to find a blind. IMO birds start to skirt the blinds the deeper you go into the season.

      Good luck and have fun!

I go hunt down there all the time. Take some fun wipes because I completely ruined my 870 with all of that salt water

I can make the drive! Hunt fresh water pockets and you won't have to worry about the salt as bad

I was just gonna drive down the beach and go into 3 mile cut....I did it a few times prolly 6-7 years ago. We never shot a lot but we did ok. Pintail and teal is what we mostly shot never had any red heads but always hear about the red head son the coast.

Just to add to this - During the late season, less is more. In other words, we only throw about 2 dozen dekes (or less) late in the season, no calls, no whistles.

We also hunt more from ground blinds later in the season. The birds get blind shy.

Well little brother and I went out this evening to try our luck and got our redheads. It was pretty cool how many we saw and how pretty of birds they are. Having problems uploading pictures or I'd share a pic
