Not trying to start any thing or put anyone down, but why the intrest in taking a bobcat or cougar? I grew up with the statement "if you are going to kill it you are going to eat it." As such I just don't understand the desire to take an animal that I'm not going to eat. Can someone explain why you have/would like to? I'm not against anyone taking any animal that is legal, I just don't have any desire to shoot something I'm not going to eat.

For my part anyway, it's for the thrill of the hunt and the trophy as well. You could eat it if you wanted. I ate the back straps from my Mountain Lion, but not my Bobcats. I know lots of people though that have taken cats as well a yotes and don't eat them. I guess it's personal preference. Kinda like bow and rifle hunting. It has to be something you want to do. Anyway. That's my perspective on it from someone who has done it. Hope that helps some.

I understand they are detrimental to your deer herd, but for me the chance to see one would out weigh any deer they may take, but then I'm a big cat fan. LMAO Walker, that is too funy. Bzzyboys how did it taste? I've never heard of anyone eating any part of one before. One a side note if anyone would like to try jackrussel my neighbor has 3 that if they start barking again at 5am tomorrow I might have at least one ready for the grill.
Just kidding people.

My business partner hunted lions in NM on the Double H ranch right before xmas and killed a 71/2 year old 170# cat with his bow. The outfitter that took him out on the mules was an 83 year old gentleman that said he had well over 1000 mountain lion kills to his credit. He along with the people that helped him and some other people around the ranch told Paul that they would much rather eat mountain lion than any venison any day. Paul brought the backstraps back, but has yet to try them. He said the backstraps really smelled like beff and did not have that "gamey smell" you get with some venison right after you take them out. So far as killing a lion, a full grown lion will average 2 mule deer kills a week per cat, so take a few cats over a ranch and the deer herd would not be around long. We have injected ourselves into the predator/prey world and if we take ourselves out, then there will be an imbalance that will eventually harm a lot of animals, not just deer.

I don't eat everything I kill. I kill a lot of coons and quite a few hogs that I don't eat. Both are vermin in large numbers. If I got a chance at a bobcat or mountain lion with my bow, I'd kill either or both and not eat them. I'm mount them, though. coyotes? I kill all I can with bow or .17. Skunks? Shoot on sight and I dang sure don't eat them. Grackles? They are on our lease by the thousands at times and we shoot a lot of them. Eating what you kill is OK to a point, but some stuff gets shot just because of what they do.

It wasn't bad. Kinda on the salty side, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get any more to eat.
Funny about the Jack Russell. Do you live next door to my next door neighbor?my neighbor has 3 of those yippin, yappin noisy little worthless rat dogs as well. If they weren't some of our best friends those little beasts would be disappearing.
To the original question, the final piece of the puzzle will be complete when this...
...is on my wall. It's part of the whole experience.Last edited by bzzboyz; 01-20-2007, 10:17 PM.
