Question for those with a gate open.

I'm in the process of gathering the material to build an entryway with a gate at the end of my driveway. I already have the mighty mule opener, but my question since I don't have power out there should I use a small sealed battery or a larger marine battery, where both would use a solar panel. Also I really don't feel comfortable in leaving a $150.00 marine battery in a plastic box on the ground. So that being said, what systems do you use to secure the battery. I have looked online an there is not much that comes up when you search for a metal battery box. I would like to have a box I can weld to the gate support. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I use a marine battery with a solar charger, inside a wooden box. I don't put a lock on it or anything. I haven't had any problems since I put it all up about two years ago.

At my buddies ranch we installed a gate opener and he found a battery that fit in a large ammo can ( there some locking ones or a kit to make it locking) bolted the ammo can to the steel post that the solar panel was mounted on. It is still working today. Buy the best battery you can for those winter days/week that there is not much sun.

That's a good idea about the ammo can. I will loo for one of those 50 cal. or bigger ones. We have a forklift battery at the lease that runs our building, and I think one that size may fit in a big ammo can I could weld to the pipe and weld a hasp of some type to it.

My gate runs off 120v, but if I had a battery sitting out front, I would build a battery box that said " Don't bother, I'm too much trouble ! "

The best thing you can do is find the receipt for that mighty mule....

We use a deep cycle marine battery with our apollo. The board and the battery are all locked in a metal box, bolted to the pole.

Not gonna happen, I found the mule kit for $175 new in the box.

Does a full size battery fit in that box?

The ammo can we used was a FatFifty he took the ammo can to a Optima battery dealer and found the largest one that would fit.
                      I hope this helps

Sure does, thank you. Is the can metal?

I have a lift master, it came with a box that holds 2 gel cell 12v Batts that is bolted and locked to the gate posts. I would try to weld or bolt a box of some sort off the ground and lock it.
