    United built homes

Any of you guys used them before? Thinking they are an alternative for me if I cant get a barndo worked out

    #2
They started building a lot of homes down south of San Antonio once the Eagleford Shnale boom started. I called them to get some feedback and it sounded good in hearing them talk about the way they built homes. What I did not like is they were building a lot homes and I did not like the idea of how many they were building in a short period of time. That concerned me on quality of their builds with that many in a short period. They had standard turnkey plans and then more customized plans. I did not look at any build from the inside but did drive by several that looked nice from the outside. Pricing was not bad but again without seeing one from the inside, I could tell you about quality.

A lot of bad reviews on them on the internet. I'd steer away from them if I were you.

We built around 2 years ago. Checked United as well as Tilson. United floor plans were our biggest issue, small and not a great use of space on most. Went with Tilson because of price to build, 99/ft and we were able to drive to Boerne and walk through the home at the office. They have 4 of the homes built on site so you can walk through. Now the building process was a different animal, the GC for Tilson never showed up and they kinda built at they're own pace. 6.5 months to build, and fit and finish like paint etc. was sketchy. But everything major like slab, framing, etc. was solid.

that was my experience with Tilson as well. I pretty much had to do the QC.

Tilson did me ok. We did catch them make a few mistakes, sheet-rocked over one set of light switches, installed the wrong color cabinets, but we made them fix everything but the cabinets. My wife changed the color of the granite to match so it worked out.

I had the foreman's cell number and called him when I found something. He was right on it. I knew there would be some issues going in since he was building 4 homes at once and they were spread far apart.

            I would use them again.

Tilson built my last home in 2007. There was a housing boom locally and getting their contractors to show up was tough...spread too thin. We had a few issues but worked them out after getting their corporate folks involved. As particular as I am, I am still satisfied with their product. ALWAYS beware of timeline promises made during a boom.

United Built did mine in 2007 down on the coast. I won't use them again.

I have never seen or heard of a builder that someone didnt have complaints about. I understand they have alot going on, but its your money so you have the right to expect perfection. It's hard to find good subs and people who try and practice perfection, so I honestly believe builders have lowered their standards. I used Designtech a few years ago, and had many of the same experiences stated above. I went with a smaller hometown builder now, but am still watching closely and doing quality control. I will never forget my Designtech foreman tell me he couldn't be there everyday. I told him i cant either, all though I was. Most but not all sub/builders don't expect the homeowner to be there looking closely, so normally they are in no hurry to cover up their sloppyness or shoddy work. That's why I went with an owner/builder, so he has noone to blame or pawn off responsibility. So far I can already see the difference between this guy and big name builders I have experience with. Main thing with any home buiild is be there every day looking, and get inspectors you can trust, not their supposed 3rd party inspectors

Bumping this old post to see if anyone has any recent experience with UBH, Tilson, or other type of builder like this. Bonus if you are in Central Texas/Brazos Valley.

Tilson has built or is building two homes off 39 between Normangee and HWY 7. One of which my wife and I like a lot

I would stay clear away from UBH. Tilson has stepped it up a lot in the last few years and so has David weekly. As with any builder you just need to stay on them about mistakes and fixing them.

Coming from somebody in the business, walk some of their job sites and see how messy they are, that usually will tell you all you need to know

Do not use David Weekley. They have cut costs over the last 10 years and quality has suffered. They use some of the cheapest labor you can find in town. Most their subs are new or desperate for work. They mark up the subs price 25-30%.

i've seen two of the Tilson Semi Custom homes being built. one in a very pricey subdivision with mostly custom custom homes. it looks very nice and fits right in. they must have pretty good set of dependable subs. not one of the subs that they used was from within 50 miles of where the house was built.

i like that they did an extensive sight and soil survey, and did not do a crazy amount of expensive dirt work. that most all the local builders think you have to do here. granted lots of places do need it but not all

that being said, if i didn't have access to great custom builder i would use Tilson
