I'm kicking around the idea of building a couple box style hog traps, but hate the idea of catching a deer in it and putting it under a bunch of unnecessary stress trying to get it out. Has anyone installed a large door opposite the trap door with some sort of remote mechanism? I am thinking along the lines of a pin at the end of a wire. If you notice a deer in the trap, grab the end of the wire and give it a good yank pulling the pins free. The door will fall open and the deer can escape.

My trap has a big door on the end. It's the same size as the end (4x4). Hinges on one end and two 1/2" tractor pins (the red handle ones at TSC). Never caught any deer but caught a couple turkeys once. Just pulled the pins and let the door down. It makes it nice too when needing to get in the trap to drag out pigs.

This is what I built and have never caught a deer. The chain that hangs on the gate if you look closely is to keep cows from going in. I have set it twice this fall and have caught 12 total. It takes them several weeks after catching some before they will start going back in. I built the gate out of square tubing and angle iron. We plan on moving the trap to another location after deer season.

Hey Chris I have large pen traps like pictured above. Deer can jump out. I also have box traps made out of cattle panels. All you need to do is leave the middle part of the top cut out. Mine has about 8" around the top still attached so a hog will hit it and not get out. Deer have no problem jumping out of it if they happen to set it off
