    Hog Trap Ideas

I'm kicking around the idea of building a couple box style hog traps, but hate the idea of catching a deer in it and putting it under a bunch of unnecessary stress trying to get it out. Has anyone installed a large door opposite the trap door with some sort of remote mechanism? I am thinking along the lines of a pin at the end of a wire. If you notice a deer in the trap, grab the end of the wire and give it a good yank pulling the pins free. The door will fall open and the deer can escape.

Build a pen trap using bull panels. Way more effective at catching hogs and the deer can jump out if they trip it. Most manual pen traps require some effort to trip therefore deer don't trip them very often.

Or you can go "whole hog" and buy an electronic camera / gate mechanism.

My trap has a big door on the end. It's the same size as the end (4x4). Hinges on one end and two 1/2" tractor pins (the red handle ones at TSC). Never caught any deer but caught a couple turkeys once. Just pulled the pins and let the door down. It makes it nice too when needing to get in the trap to drag out pigs.

Exactly what I had in mind. Really didn't think about it making things easier when it comes time to drag the pigs out, BONUS!!!

This is what I built and have never caught a deer. The chain that hangs on the gate if you look closely is to keep cows from going in. I have set it twice this fall and have caught 12 total. It takes them several weeks after catching some before they will start going back in. I built the gate out of square tubing and angle iron. We plan on moving the trap to another location after deer season.

I usually pile thorny brush limbs in the trap door to keep deer from getting into the trap. Hogs will root through the limbs to get into the trap. Works well for me and do not catch deer when I have the limbs in front of the trap door.

I have a figure '6' trap in place already that hasn't been productive, but I am new to hog traps and trying to work out some kinks. I'm wanting a couple of traps that are a little more portable.

I cut a piece of panel and wire it across the entrance, about 18" above the ground--primarily for calves, but seems to work for deer too as I've only caught one doe in the past 10-12 years.

Hey Chris I have large pen traps like pictured above. Deer can jump out. I also have box traps made out of cattle panels. All you need to do is leave the middle part of the top cut out. Mine has about 8" around the top still attached so a hog will hit it and not get out. Deer have no problem jumping out of it if they happen to set it off

Jager Pro Traps. I bought one in Oct. and we have caught over 110 pigs so far on our 5k acres. I would like to catch 250 by may.
