There's really no excuse to shoot a button buck. People that do clearly haven't spent enough time watching deer.
Yes I know this that's why I said had to waste buck tags they were broke through

Size of deer, length of nose, nubs, flat head vs rounded head on doe. Different ways to tell but the best way to avoid it is just don't shoot yearlings.

          My rule as well

My uncle ( who basically got me into deer hunting) has killer a nibbling buck every year as long as I can remember. Honestly I bet he's killed 20+ nubbins...

Same exact story every year. " I was gonna kill me a doe for some sausage and she walked out to the feeder... boom. Hey, you won't believe what it was...." me: "a nubbin buck".... him "yea..I couldn't believe it, heck it's November I figured it would have horns by now"... every year like I'm watching groundhogs day

Look at the snout. Young deer have a short stubby snout. A mature doe will have a longer snout.

Since I only bowhunt, good 10x42 binos are all I need. If I can't see nubs inside of 30 yards, it's either time for better binos or time to go see the optometrist.

A lease I hunted on had a $1000 fine for it. It was amazing how competent people became at identifying nubbin bucks.
