    Loss of compression multiple cylinders

My truck engine starting running rough last weekend, then the check engine light came on, but then went off next time I restarted it. Until last night, when it felt like it was about to die in idle. Dropped it off at the mechanic this morning and I have loss or low compression in 3 or 4 cylinders.

Any idea what a chevy engine costs? Should I get a 2nd opinion? (not sure I can safely drive anywhere to get a look). Is there regular maintenance that would have prevented it?

182k and I've only had oil changes, brakes and a little front end work required

What motor? Notice any ticking in the valve-train?

Seems like low miles for bad compression...

Might be blocked or partially blocked oil passages or weak oil pump that contributed.

2007 and newer 5.3? get a 2nd opinion if so.

Definitely second opinion ... maybe a third for an expense that involved? Did the mechanic say which cylinders? All on one side or not? That could shed a little more light on a cause? I'd definitely get the specifics from #1 guy to compare to what the #2 opinion guy says.

Then get on a Chevy forum somewhere and see if the symptoms coincide with any "known" issues for your particular truck model. Get a little smarter on the issue before you make a big jump on a motor or another vehicle ... or deal with mechanics.

5.3 07'-09' were bad about collapsing lifters. Could be your issue if it happened without warning or spilling oil on the ground.

2008 Chevy 4.8 L V8. Loss of compression was not strictly on one side. I think she said 3, 5,6,&7 with low pressure on 4

Good chance it's lifters. A leak down on those cylinders will show if ring is broke or wore out. Valve train has A lot to do with compression as well which is where lifters play a part in that

Guessing your not motor savy which is fine. I'd get another opinion before big exspense like that. Definitely would like to be sure on problem before spending a couple grand.

Lifters were crap, due to the cylinder deactivation. I have to agree that there is a really good chance that's the problem.
