Never seen it myself and I started out hunting Elk years ago in the NorthWest, but our "rivers" around Mt. St. Helens where I lived I could wade across myself in hip-boots. Matter of fact I used to sometimes walk across the river from my cabin to hunt a clearcut that was across from me. I'd practice bugleing on my deck and If something came out I'd sneak across. If caribou can swim I don't see why an Elk couldn't do it though?

While we're on the subject...do whitetail swim? I'm in West Texas so I've never seen that either

There were some free ranging in the Groveton/Apple Springs area a few years back that had gotten out of a high fence place in a flood. You'll hear about one every now and then.

A buddy of mine has seen one or two near Rockport near the Aransas Refuge. They couldn't believe their eyes, a nice bull Elk standing in the pasture , low fence. I believe that one probably escaped a high fence though.

Evidently the farmer caught flack for it and here was a response from a one Doug Johnson (is that you Mudslinger)?
Yep, that's the story, Devin. I grew up in Tulia. This farm was actually west of Tulia, closer to Nazareth (from what I heard). Like I said, the farmer even used Audie's gun to kill the bull. Don't think any laws were broken there.
