My problem with "redneck boresight" is that I do not have a good vice to secure the gun so if an center the bore on target and make adjustments.

I didn't do the bore sighting, Cabela's did, supposedly.

Well that's what I thought too.... but even at 25 yds I was off target and couldn't see where dirt was kicking up behind. Finally got a spotter and he confirmed I was shooting way high. Able to move down and ended up about 6" high before I ran out of daylight

You don't really even need a great rest. I 'bore sighted' a rifle as described off my tailgate pointing it at a distant cow last week and was on a 4x4 piece of plywood at 130 yards. With a little more care and a 50 yard start you'd easily be on paper.

Double check by going back and forth between looking through the barrel and scope. Reassemble the rifle and shoot. It should get you on paper at 100 yards
This how we do it. Will never have anyone else do it. On paper every time.

I don't know what Cabelas store you had your rifle bore sighted at, but I had a horrible experience with the store in Buda, TX. I had scopes mounted and bore sighted on two different rifles - a Winchester 100 in .243 Winchester, and a PSA AR-15 in 6.8SPC. Neither would hit anywhere on a 5'x3' piece of paper at either 25 or 50 yards. Checked both scopes and mounts and found they hadn't been properly tightened, in fact, the scope on the .243 was only "finger tight". Went back down to Cabelas and asked for the Gun Department Manager. I calmly discussed with him my abject disappointment and surprise at their "service". I haven't been "Yes sir'd" and "No sir'd" so much in years. He told me they had some people working in the gun department that weren't as skilled and competent as they had said they were. I told him that wasn't my problem, but that he had made it my problem. He told me he would have the scopes on the rifles remounted and re-bore sighted by their resident expert. Though he didn't like it, I also asked him to provide me with replacement ammo for both rifles (2 boxes of .243 Winchester, and 1 box of 6.8SPC).

Afterwards, I went back to the range to zero the rifles. Sigh, both were still off. I bit the bullet and bought a laser bore sighter, as well as the old style, grid type bore sighter and did it myself. Previously, I've had the same store mount scopes and bore sight a Savage 99 in .308 Winchester. That rifle was dead on at 100 yards (3 shots into a dime-sized group). Personally, I'd be real hesitant to take another rifle to have a scope mounted and/or bore sighted by Cabelas. YMMV.

          Regards,

          Dave

Best thing that I've found other than doing it myself is to take the gun, mounts and scope to a rifle range and pay them to do it. With the cost of ammo these days, what's $20 or so.

Exactly what I do with all my guns. Works perfectly

Could it be you're just a horrible shot?

This is how I did mine and it worked VERY well...not only was I on paper but was only a few inches off at my 100 yd target distance.

Well that's why I bought the gun and scope, to alleviate my **** poor marksmanship.

When I finally got it on paper there were 5 nice holes all in a group

Here's what I do. I have some paper I got somewhere that is about the same size as a full size silhouette target. I put an orange stick on dot in the center. I shoot at 25 yd. very rarely will you not be on the large paper. Adjust your scope/sights to be a couple in. low at 25. Back up to 50, and fire a couple verifiers. Go to 100 and adjust to what you want your zero to be. I've saved lots of ammo once I started doing that, but you must know where those first shots go, or you're just shooting holes in the air.

PS: I mount my own scopes and do my own sighting in.

Did one yesterday on the kitchen table after replacing a base. Neighbor has a trash can behind their barn with a white sticker at 100 yrds. Its perfect been useing it for years. I told them about it and they keep the can facing the right way for me.

This type of grouping is usually prefaced by a statement "I've hunted all my life" and its more normal than you think when qualifying a hunter.
