    Decoy?

Has anyone hunted a decoy (doe or buck) with success? How about specifically in East Texas? I have never personally hunted one but you see them used on tv and wondering just how well they work or if it is just another gimmick..........your thoughts?

Mixed success, it will sometimes scare a doe off, but I've also seen the same buck mount the decoy 5 times. He got really frustrated. I've left her out at night and found her knocked down the next morning.

I have had success with my primos scar decoy but it has also spooked deer...works best during the rut on bucks not following a doe, if a doe sees the decoy they avoid it..

Has worked the two times I have used it. Shot a 10 point during the rut with it and used it this season on public land in the rut. Both times I set it out as a doe. This year it pulled my buck off of a live doe. Brought him into 10 yards.

As suggested above. It works best during the rut on bucks not following a doe, if a doe sees the decoy they avoid it.. My experience. When the does blow out and start all that stomping etc. I look at the edge of the woods and dang there he was. Flag waving. I ask myself if I only would have not had that decoy out would he have come in? Tough call, but I have had very quick hunts with them also.

Yes and yes in East Texas. Several threads on here about hunting with decoys. I had an 8 point try to breed a doe decoy. They also work out if the rut as a confidence decoy. Meaning a deer will see it and walk out thinking it's safe.

Thank you for the input. Now which decoy would y'all recommend if I were to buy one?

Montana's are good ones. You can even use a deer target. A deer won't think it's s fake. Spell check jacked up my last post. I was trying to say even after the rut a decoy can be used. Where I hunt in East Texas deer will walk out and stop to look at the decoy every time. In my experience I think it relaxes the real deer and they come on out and feed. If anything it gives you a few extra seconds to look at the deer while it's looking at the decoy. Gotta watch the other East Texas hunters though. I've had a few take a good look at my decoy through the scope. Never had one shoot it yet.

I might pick me one up and give it a try. At 375acres per hunter and no one allowed within 7/800 yards of each other if someone's scoping my decoy they are poaching

I've never used a decoy but several years ago I had a 3D course set up in the woods behind my house. I had three or four deer targets, bucks and does. I finally had to take the antlers off the bucks because they kept getting their butts whooped.

I'm definitely gonna give it a shot and see what happens for me!

If your rattling and grunting it gives them a visual target when they appear out of the woods, also gives you time to put the horns down and grab your gun or bow

ABCDJ took one of his mounts out and it got the attention of good buck. From what I have heard on here, walking in East Texas with a large mount may not be a great idea
