    "Freezer Filling" in Utopia!

Last weekend, I was hunting with some industry friends out at a ranch in Utopia, TX. It was a low fenced ranch (that actually neighbored the Record Buck ranch) so the potential was good to see some nice bucks. I sat a 16’ ladder stand that overlooked kind of an open area. At one point, I had nearly 10 deer in front of me but no shooters (I committed to myself not shooting any bucks that were smaller than what I already have on the wall). As the whitetail moved out…a lone fallow doe made her way into my area. When I was assured that she didn’t have a boyfriend following her, I got to thinking…”Hmmm, she’s big and will provide some more venison for the freezer and I could also get a nice tanned hide for the couch at my new cabin.” Before I knew it, I had drawn the Heli-M and was watching the ACC arrow slice through her rib cage and bury deep into the ground behind her. As she ran off spewing blood, I knew it would be a short tracking job. I found her about 50 yards behind me in the mesquite brush.

I continued to see a lot of deer the remainder of the weekend but just no shooters. I was tempted by a nice 10-pointer but I stayed disciplined and just regulated the hunt to taking does to help out the land owner. As I prepared to drill a nice fat WT doe, a flock of corn buzzards crashed into my feeder area blowing out everything! Unfortunately, one of the gobblers paid the ultimate price by taking an arrow to the chest at 26 yards. As he flopped around, all of his comrades started jumping on and pecking him. Wild things that turkeys do . Anyway, although no trophy bucks were taken on this trip, it was a great time with some good friends afield.

    Good Hunting to you all.

Good Shooting! I work with a couple guys that have ranches that are next to the Record Buck. My wife killed her Black Buck on the South Hills ranch.
