    Help me choose a rifle

I'm wanting to buy my brother a rifle for Christmas, he's just now getting into hunting and has been talking about getting a rifle down the road...im wanting to get him a solid but not too expensive rifle

Anyone know of a good solid rifle under 400$

Of course it needs to be centerfire, maybe .223 or .243 and .270....

I'm a bowhunter so I'm not too familiar with the rifle scene other than my .22lr's that are fun to shoot

You could get a savage axis for under 400.00

Can get a Remington 700 in .270 for less than $400 from gander or dicks. Fantastic gun/price but trigger stinks

Savage rifles are going to be the best bet and then some Remington 700 sps

I'm leaning towards either a savage .223 or savage axis .243

I have a savage mark II .22lr and love it.....thanks

              Tikka T3?

They're $498 at EuroOptics and come with rings plus you avoid the tax so might put it in the budget

I would go with the Ruger American Rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor. I toured the Ruger plant and I can tell you that I was much impressed. As many of you know, I shot for Savage for years and helped to design a couple of their rifles and love their products as well. I would avoid the Remington as their quality is not what it used to be.

If he is going to be deer hunting I would steer away from 223. Effective, but not the best deer caliber IMO.

243 is good, but I would go with a 270. Ammo is easy to find, you can hunt a lot more animals (even Elk IMO).

                  Good Luck

I second this. I have a good friend who has the Ruger in a .308 and it is a great rifle.

I bought the Savage Axis in .308 last year and have been impressed. It's not a high end gun by any means but it's a great starter gun for sure.

Savage or ruger american. You can get a ruger all day on bud's for around $365 even though guys here try to sell them used for $400+
