    The Salvation Army rant

My wife and I went to the Salvation Army shelter yesterday to hand out some stuff to help these folks during the cold weather.
The way the truck was packed we had to hand out the adult sized items first before we could get to the children's items.
We are about half way through the adult items and they sent a security guard out there to tell us that we couldn't hand out items and that we had to leave.
My wife told the guy very nicely that we where going to leave as soon as we could hand out the children's clothes and toys. He got irate and said the wrong thing to my wife , ( curse words ) and I lost it. I told him he better waddle his self inside and find a manager and that he was not going to say another word to my wife.
We got down to the kids items and the entire time he was just standing there with a sour look on his face getting all pumped up and mad. He finally said he was calling the cops , I told him go ahead I had bail money and a lawyer on speed dial, the police never showed of course. We finished up and left but I'm done with ever giving the Salvation Army another dime, I'll keep doing it like we did last night.

What did he indicate was illegal about you handing out stuff?
Isn't that what THEY are supposed to do?

I quit giving to "charities" like that when Goodwill said the stuff I wanted to donate wasn't good enough.
Now I despise them all, due to the way I was treated there.

I don't know your situation, but some folks use Goodwill as a dump to get rid of their junk. Goodwill needs stuff that has value.

I gave up on donating to "big" charities. I now donate to local charities.

He said that if we wanted to distribute stuff we had to give it to them and they would do it.
There isn't any signs anywhere on their property saying we couldn't be there or that we couldn't hand out stuff.

Me too. A little research into the big charities often shows massive overhead costs. Others, like UNICEF, make it next to impossible to perform the act of charity in which the charity was originally founded for in the first place.

I havent given a dollar or donation of any type to the big charities in over a decade. I give straight to those in need. I dont care if it costs me the ability to take a tax deduction or not. I want to see 100% of every dollar I give go straight to those in need.

Sooner or later nearly all big charities turn out to be scams in one way or another. People can't help but want them to not be scams so they don't look too hard or bury their head in the sand. It's really sad.

Goodwill isn't a charity. Goodwill takes things that people DONATE and put it up FOR SALE in their STORES with premium retail locations. They take free stuff and sell it for a profit, they falsely claim to hire a certain percentage of disabled persons to fit in a loophole that allows them to be considered a Non-profit business. They rake those profits in tax-free by selling goods, at a profit, that they get from you and I for free. What in the hell is charitable about that? Do a little research on Goodwill and you won't donate there again.

I do not donate clothing, food, toys to any big name foundations, retail location and sadly I decided several years ago to no longer donate these items to the church. I ONLY donate now person to person/family. So that I know 100% of my donation is going to someone who TRULY needs it.

                          this man knows his stuff.

Goodwill, Susan G. Komen, Wounded Warriors are all organizations that will get zero of my dollars. I suggest everyone do serious research on charitable giving. Make sure you know where your dollars are going.

This is our approach as well. We want to help but I don't want to make somebody rich in the process. We find the folks who need some help and go straight to the source.
I wasn't a bit concerned if they actually did call the police but he was making the people I was trying to help nervous and they started leaving, one of the women told us that the security guard could kick them out if he decided too.
It would have been hilarious to get arrested for giving away toys and coats.
Imagine how that would have sounded.

I give straight to people in need and bypass the middle man. I could care less about a tax break as I give to help others and that is the way it should be. By giving directly to people in need, I know that 100% of what I give goes to those that need it most.
