    Axis Question

My FIL bought my wife an axis hunt for Christmas. Currently she shoots a sendero 7mag with Hornady Superformance 139gr bullets. We have never lost an animal with them but it doesn't get a pass thru either. My questions will those work on an axis behind the shoulder? Or should I switch to a pointed soft point bullet or something like a Barnes or a partition bullet. I've never shot an axis so I don't know much about about them. Thanks for the help

That will work fine. I've killed them with a 40 gr .233

Shoot through the shoulder. They are a plains animal and carry their vitals a little farther forward than whitetail. Great hunting and better eating! Good luck

Thanks for the info. I didn't know about their vitals.

Yep on the vitals being farther forward. I had an axis doe at 10 yards this morning. You know you're getting old when u pass on good eats like that because it was a little rainy out and I didn't feel like cleaning it.

What do y'all normally get done with the meat? I'm thinking burger and sausage.

Your good with the gun and bullet. I like making burger out of them with brisket mixed in. Need to shoot them in the shoulder

Axis is some great eating. Mainly do steaks from the loins and back legs and then grind the rest.

Not with axis. Keep the backstraps either whole or butterflied. Tenderloins whole. Steak the hams. Burger or sausage everything else, just don't grind the whole animal. That's some good steak to keep.

Personally I wouldn't make sausage. Axis for me are a rare treat if I can get one. I keep the backstraps, steak out 1 ham, then grind the rest into 100% burger no add ins. When word gets out I am making axis bacon burgers, people start showing up to the house. Ground Axis tacos for taco Tuesday!!!

I steak as much as possible. Have whole roasted the quarters which turns out great. Also there is good rib meat on axis as well not like whitetail.
