    Building materials pricing

I'm starting to line up everything for our barndo build; hoping to do most of the work myself.

When it comes to supplies, lumber, sheetrock, electrical components, etc., is there enough savings to buy from a lumber yard or electrical supply house vs. Home Depot or Lowes?

I did find rebar at about half the price that I could get it at a box store; that's what got me thinking about the other supplies.

For example, a pre-cut 2x4 stud (9') is $3.12 at Home Depot. What will I pay at a lumber yard?

250' of 12/2 Romex is $52.74 (21 cents/ft) at Home Depot. What's the cost at an electrical supply?

I'd get a quote from a McCoys store for everything and have it delivered. Price is good and quality is mucho bueno!

      This
You will get better quality materials and they typically deliver it for free or very minimal charge
Home Depot and Lowes is not nearly the quality!!!

        What they said.^^^^

HD and Lowes lumber is terrible. McCoys is much better.

Whatever you do don't buy from Home Depot or Lowes. I use their lumber on small projects around the house for convenience, but would not use it for a home of any kind.

Saved $4 a sheet on Sheetrock for my remodel using a lumber yard over HD or lowes.

Lowe's & HD will have hard-to-beat pricing on commodity items like studs, OSB, etc., but I sure wouldn't build a house with them and have to rely on their customer service. Find a real lumber yard.

I priced out electrical at elliot electrical way cheaper than box stores. I saved about $300 on 200ft of supply wire. not sure on romex pricing.

i second mccoys on lumber....way better.

Recently bought some #4 romex for a RV line. HD was close to $4 a foot. Crawford Electric Supply was $2.50 ish. I would completely shop around.

I'm not sold on McCoy's lumber. I recently finished the outside of a cabin were building and quite a bit came from them, some was delivered from local lumber yard and some from Home Depot and Lowes. I like the convenience of pulling through to load up at McCoys but there lumber wasn't the best.
I'm not a fan of Home Depot but they did have the best lumber and price.
For metal prices I would try Tripple SSS steel if there is one around you. They normall have the cheapest price on bulk steel.

Is there a Tripple S steel in Victoria? I gotten stuff in San Antonio from them.

On another note I went to Midcoast Electric Supply and they told me the the price on the 2/0 and 3/0 thhn I wanted that they couldn't touch lowes and HD's prices.

Like the OP, I am about to build a barndo, and I am going to finish out the interior.

Over the past 12 years, I have done some major home remodeling jobs and exterior remodeling jobs. For my barndo, I will not be buying any bulk material (dimensional studs, sheet rock, Hardi-board, plywood, etc.) from Lowe's or HD. Their quality is questionable, and their prices are high, unless you get a clearance sale on a pallet.

I have had good experiences with "84 Lumber". Their prices were better than the box stores, and the quality was greatly better. They also understand real construction.

Don't ignore your local Lumber Stores, either. Especially, if they are located by a rail-road track.

In my home town, the family-owned lumber store is 100 yards from a main line. When I was a kid, they would put 2-3 box cars of lumber on a side line that was 75 yards from the yard. I got to help unload those box cars

The 84 Lumber yard that I use, has its own rail delivery track, that is 20 feet from its lumber yard. I think that makes huge difference in the price/quality they can offer.

Look for lumber yards near a rail road, then deal aggressively when buying bulk materials. They have room to give.

                        Randy
