    Chevy Mechanic ??

My instrument panel went out and I know this was a problem with the 2004 HD trucks like mine. It is too old and has too many miles for the free fix. Went to the dealer and they want 500 to fix it.
Can I get an aftermarket instead?
The dealer talked about programing it.
    What needs to be programed?
If anybody knows the answer I would appreciate it. I hate paying the dealer price if I can do it myself and save $$.

Do absolutely none of the gauges work?

Are you talking about all of the gauges going out? But lights and odometer still work?

If so just order the GM X27 stepper motors off of Ebay. All 6 are about $25 total. Watch a youtube video on how to replace them.

I did mine a few years ago. I was intimidated to do it at first but ended up being really simple. Did it in a few hours one evening.

My 04 tahoe did that^ i swapped clusters, had it at 2 different mechanics. After a lot of bs it ended up being a fuse gone bad. Might wanna check those before spending a lot of $$

Good idea I double check it. It is intermittent though so may be a bad fuse or connection on the back of the panel?

Yes sir. Id check all the fuses, relays and what not on the side panel and under the hood. If that dont work, take the cluster out ( only takes a few min) and clean the plug ins

I have an 05 with similar problems. The dealer here won't even give me a quote unless I pay him $85.00

I've watched several videos and frankly it doesn't look that hard. My problem is that I'm so shaky I can't do small things like that anymore so I need to find someone to repair mine. If anyone knows of anyone in the Burleson area please let me know.

If you replace it with a rebuilt one the mileage has to be reprogramed or it requires a sticker of some kind. So I'm told.

You can get a rebuilt one with a core charge and send yours to them to get your core charge back. They will reprogram with the milage you tell them. They run from $150 to $200 with a $200 or more core charge. I'm just not real trusting of people I don't know anything about.

                            Good luck with yours.

Mine did it went to Napa and had to order a new cluster they just gave me an affidavit for mileage etc.
Don't remember how much it was but way cheaper and quick.
