    NM Pronghorn DIY Questions

I am really wanting to go on a NM pronghorn hunt next year. From the research I have done, there are basically three options.

    1. Get drawn and be assigned a ranch to hunt on. Drawing seems to be really difficult in NM. (Least expensive)
    2. Go through an outfitter using a drawn tag or more expensive LO tag. (Most expensive)
    3. Obtain a LO tag and do a DIY where permission is granted. (In between 1 and 2 on cost)

I am most interested in options 1 and 3. Has anyone hunted goats in NM going these routes, and if so, any tips, general information, and/or contact info regarding LO tags would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've only drawn rifle tags and they send you the ranch assignment. Pretty easy and not a lot of research other than looking at maps/photographs of the ranch.

You could also try to draw an archery tag and hunt the public land in the unit the tag is good for.

I'm in the same dilemma. I've done #1 for several years now with no success in being drawn.

I received a Cabelas TAGS booklet in the mail last night and will start doing some research through that.

I drew a tag as a resident several year ago. It is a pretty tough draw. I think purchasing a land owner tag direct from the LO and DIY is your best option. If you can find one. Just make sure you get it in a good unit.
Probably cheaper routes in other states that have quantity over quality.

We get private land every year.
IMO it is the way to go!

Is the only way to obtain a LO tag, without going through an outfitter, to know somebody who knows somebody?

Look at the NM G&F site the click on the A-Plus link. Should have contact info for unit landowners.

yep. i'm browsing that now. there's a long list of contacts throughout the state with info that shows #of acres and allowed harvest / # of animals allotted.

any idea on a "reasonable" rate to pay the landowners ? i know it's entirely up to them, but, wondering if there is an average $ ?

We got lucky the first year thru a know somebody situation. We go thru an outfitter now but do a diy.

Tag costs can vary thru the state. We have hunted 2 different parts. Anywhere from 2,000 and up isn't unreasonable.
On top of the tag it cost about $500 more for the licenses

A lot of the landowners use outfitters. The decent places that produce good goats will be thru an outfitter.

Does it have to be New Mexico? Even living in New Mexico I could not get a tag. 1st year putting in for Wyoming I got one.
