    Which bullet and why?

Alright folks....heres a question for the gun guys. I just got a new .270 Win. I keep getting mixed answers from friends and family on which type of bullet to choose from. I'm either going with a 130 or 150 grain bullet. The biggest game animal I might take it a bull elk in a few weeks...maybe. Typical deer and exotics(axis, aoudad, hogs, sheep) will be the main game. Theres power points, soft points, core lokts, ballistic silvertips...its so confusing sometimes. I really couldn't decide which to get last night at Bass Pro.

So which bullet and why would you get it? I've shot deer with .223s and have never lost a deer. So could a 130 gr bullet take down a bull elk? What will the difference be in felt recoil.

Thanks guys and gals for the responces in advance.

These have become my favorite bullet:

This year, Winchester builds upon its legacy, offering a diverse lineup of cartridges for the range and in the field.

Im not saying it wont work bc a well placed bullet will but a .270 is light for an elk but if you do go with it use a 150grain and limit your shot distance to maintain as much energy as possible.

Pretty much any 130gr bullet will kill a whitetail. If you're a neck shooter find a Core-lokt or other PSP that shoots well and you'll be fine. They tend to make a mess of both shoulders if you don't neck shoot.

For Elk I'd look at the Federal Sierra GameKing 150gr. They'll work fine and penetrate very well.

My uncle shoots a 270 for whitetails and he uses the 130gr. Remington Soft Point Core-Lokt. I would think for elk you would want to use a 150 gr.

personally, I'd recommend the Federal Premium Trophy Bonded Tip 130 gr. or the 270 Win. Barnes Triple-Shock X-Bullet 130 gr

Shot placement is everything .... especially in big game such as the elk

You can’t go wrong with the 150gr Nosler Partition. It does really well in 270. My dad shot it for 30 something years in his and I could never get him to change bullets or weights. My next favorite in 270 would be either Accubond or a Ballistic Tip.

Tough question, you always hear about needing to use this bullet for this and that bullet for that and so on. I am a firm believer in it's where you put the bullet that counts. I worked with some guy's from Montana that always had a good laugh at all the out of state hunters that came elk hunting with their huge magnum guns and 200 grain bullets. They were adamant in their belief that bullet placement was the important part. Their thought was that most guy's came on a once in a lifetime trip, and brought a cannon that they could'nt shoot well, and as a result wounded more game as a result. My long winded opinion is find what your gun shoots best and you are comfortable with and go with it. Most of these guy's shot elk with 120 grn 25-06, I know cause I went with them on a couple of hunts, these guys were deadly with em.

At least a 150 grain for one that may not make that perfect shot everytime. It is about finishing the deal, not trailing a wounded animal for miles. Hornady makes a light magnum in 270 that gives you a little extra power. Nossler partition is a good one.

I have the Hornady light Mag for my .280. 139 grain super shock tip. It's a ballistic tip and it did a number on some deer with shots behind the shoulder and tears up the neck. Pick one your gun likes and go with it. Like said earlier, "shot placement"!

                            ditto.

you're shooting a big animal, go with a good proven bullet. Although I wouldn't recommend the ballistic tip in 270 for elk. I shoot ballistic tips in my 7mm and they work great on deer, but they expand much faster than a partition, and will not give you the penetration on a bigger animal
