I chuckle when someone says they know where there meat came from and when they say organic meat!

I know there are a select few that Hunt free on national forest and process all deer themselves and I can see how that can be an economical way to feed a family.
I still feel that 99 percent of all hunters Hunt for enjoyment and the thrill of killing a monster buck. I think some just need an excuse to kill a young buck. I deal with several of these people on my lease and even though we have rules on buck harvest they still feel they have to kill a buck no matter how small or young. many of these same people refuse to kill a doe even though we each are allowed to kill 2

They take their deer to a processor. Every single one of them hunts doe or deer for meat in the freezer before they hunt to shoot a big buck. The first lesson I learned when I moved down here was "meat first, sport later." It may cost a lot of money but its not just about shooting a "monster buck." Its about spending time with family and friends, hanging around the campfire swapping stories, watching wildlife grow and mature, feeding your family without ever having to buy second hand meat from a store. It's costly and it's work, but its a hell of a way to bond and enjoy what mother nature has to offer, and maybe bagging a monster buck at some point in your life ;D

I moved to TX in 2014 and have killed two deer so far. One was on Steven F Austin State Park last year, and the other one was on an old Army buddy's lease in San Saba a few weeks ago. One was an old doe, and the other was (unfortunately) a nubbin buck (which also happened to be the only antlerless deer I saw during shooting hours). It probably cost more in gas driving to San Saba and back than it would have to go buy meat at the store considering how small he was. However, it's also about the experience and catching up with an old friend.
I'm also going on the exotic hunt at South Llano River SP in February, and will hopefully get multiple critters to make the trip more cost efficient. If I do happen to get a monster axis buck, there's a good chance I'll get it mounted; but that's not the reason I'm going.
Long story short, I hunt for meat. Not because it's always the cheaper route, but because I enjoy it and like knowing exactly where my meat came from. Plus it just tastes better. I have no lease, feeders, atv, blinds, etc. Oh, I also grind it all up myself except for the back straps and tenderloins. I do that strictly to save money.
If you're able to trophy hunt where money is not an option - more power to you, and good luck!

I hunt public land and have around 300 hours on stand this season. For as much as I've spent on gas, I could probably eat Omaha steaks for the whole year.
You can do whatever you want, but its a hobby, and there are few hobbies out there that give back ANY money back that you put into them without competing.

Would be willing to wager no one in the lower 48 is hunting deer to feed themselves, those days are long gone, its now just a hobby and a more expensive one every year.Last edited by bossbowman; 12-22-2016, 08:01 PM.

I'm with the crowd on way more expensive than store bought meat. Watching the kids and Grandkids playing at camp, roasting weiners, sumores, etc, with a big fire cannot be replaced at any cost. Also getting excited about tomorrow mornings hunt. I've posted several threads about my Grandkids kills. JMO!Last edited by doghouse; 12-22-2016, 07:25 PM.

Considering I haven't bought more than 5 pounds of beef in almost two years I think it's safe to say I hunt for meat as much as anything. Right now I have 80 pounds of deer meat in my freezer that only cost a hunting license and some gas money. Add that to an aoudad and half a dozen hogs this year and I don't see me buying meat for a while. My family prefers wild game to store bought. My wife is practically begging me to kill another sheep so we can make more sausage out of it. My 2 year old has eaten more deer meat than he has beef if his whole life.

I'm a meat hunter. I love the flavor of wild game and the feeling of knowing my freezer is full of fish and game I harvested with my hands. With that said I won't pretend my family would starve without it. Hell even the destitude get government food stamps, no one's family goes unfed for the most part in the US.
