Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! One man's junk is another man's treasure, one hunter passes a deer the same deer is a trophy for another hunter.

Not my position, that is my dad's place to discuss. Dad like shooting big deer, but not as much as the joy on his grandkids' faces when they kill one....
I really never post about these, but if I could see my dads smile 1 more time I wouldn't care if my nephew shot the world record whitetail. a lot of times we miss the best things , worried about the little things! Your dads smile will be there forever even long after that deer. I'm just as guilty as anyone, and I'm not throwing stones. I bet this site is full of guys who would trade you their biggest deer on their ranch for "one more smile and hunt from dad"Last edited by Tumbler; 12-02-2016, 07:30 PM.

I was a die hard management minded hunter for many years until something happened about 5 years ago. That something was taking my boy hunting. My story is just like Garguy's and I almost turned my boy off from hunting because every deer that came in wasn't old enough, wasn't big enough, or I wouldn't let him shoot a hog, coyote, fox, etc. because we were looking for that big mature deer. I wouldn't let him shoot a doe unless she was old and barren. What I had failed to realize or remember was that my Grandad, Dad, and uncles didn't do that to me. If they had I'd probably not even hunt today and I couldn't imagine not being an outdoorsman. There is a time and a place for management but at the end of the day your dad and nephew were happy! I've come full circle and I just love seeing my boy get jacked up about shooting 40 pound pig or a coyote. That's what it's about and there's not doubt we'll spend some time managing and chasing big deer together one day as a result of him having fun with it now.

I've been watching this guy all fall, he hits a new feeder daily, but passing on him as he had great potential and a very young buck.
C'est la vie
Temptation is s beech!! Even for a seasoned hunter , much less a young hunter with an itchy finger..
Have an educational talk with him about what potential that buck, you don't have to me to direct.

I don't understand why anyone thinks anyone else gives two squirts about their opinion on whether or not they should have killed a deer.
Bottom line is if you hunt with other people and there are rules about what is to be shoot then follow them if not shoot whatever you want.
I've also noticed that most of the people (Not all) that talk about how other people should be more selective don't really have the portfolio to back it up themselves

Right on Buff! I would say congrats to the young man for the nice buck! We need to do all we can to keep young people interested in hunting, and telling them what they can or can't shoot sucks all the fun out of it.
I just got back from hunting our family farm in Kansas, and I was fortunate enough to shoot 2 deer. I hesitated to post pics of the buck because he was a small 6 point, probably 2.5 years old, maybe younger. I could imagine what some guys would say about it. But you know, it was my first buck ever at 48 years old, taken from the ground with a longbow, and I couldn't have been more excited. I had been trying to kill a dang deer with the longbow for 10 years. To me, the trophy is in the memory of the hunt, and the effort that went into it. The antlers are going on the wall, and when someone asks about that little deer, I'll be able to tell them why I'm proud of them.
Another trophy that is even better is the excitement in the eyes of someone who hasn't hunted before when they harvest an animal. I hesitate to take my kids deer hunting here in Texas because it's too easy to see excitement turn into disappointment when they realize that when an deer finally shows up they can't shoot it for some reason.

Congrats to him! Yes for some of us it does suck to see a young deer killed with potential but I would rather see a youngster get out in the woods then stay at home and play video games all day! Hey we all have to start somewhere! It just about killed my son this past weekend when I made him pass a 2.5 year old 8 point that was a HOSS its like he almost lost interest since he hasn't killed a deer yet. Made me feel horrible so I booked a meat hunt in San Antonio so he can get it done!

Hard to give an opinion since we don't know too many of the facts. I hunt public land and would take that deer in a heart beat if given the chance. Of course, I would take any deer that presented an opportunity.
I guess management is everything to some. Not everyone, including this young man have the same mind set. People need to get over the fact that we all have different ideas and beliefs.
