    Morning Hunt

Couldn't stand it any longer-had to go to my Wimberley place this morning.

Cool but not cold, windy as well. Feeder spun at 6:25--too early, but nothing showed up for 30 minutes. Heard the "crunch, crunch, crunch" coming from downwind and when I spotted the animal I saw antlers and a much larger body than Ive been seeing. Well, antlers weren't large, almost out to the ears and a spindly 6- or 8-point, but plenty of venison for me. Only problem--he was skittish and never got to a position for a shot. Kept bobbing his head and putting the hard stare on me every time he raised his head. Finally, after maybe a minute, away he went back in the direction he came from.

Followed by a long, uneventful sit until an hour later and I hear the magic sounds again, from directly behind me. Closer and closer until I see the deer just over the toe of my left boot--a buck fawn. Went towards the feeder and started cleaning corn. Heard more noise and picked up another deer, a doe, that eventually got to one of the hand corn piles and put her head down, but too small. Two more does come from the same direction, but they wouldn't come on it. Then here comes one from beyond the feeder, in a hurry, and more antlers-sort of. Small bodied forkhorn. Too small to shoot so I sat and watched him for about 30 minutes. Then I decided to shoot him--with the camera.

Stayed until 9-ish, got down adjusted the feeder time, pulled the camera cards, and figured I just had a good sit--6 deer seen, three of which I could have drawn on. I went to the bottom stand next. No corn under the feeder so something had been there as well. Pulled those cards too, and came on home. I'll be back.

As we all say--a bad day in the stand beats a good day elsewhere.
