    What State???

Ok guys i stared a thread the other day about where to go to shoot a big whitetail. I dont really want to go anywhere in Texas. I would like to go somewhere like Illinois, Kansas, Montana, Ohio or one of the many other big deer states. I want to hear from the guys who have traveled north and shot a big deer 140+, what state should i go to. Also if you have any good outfitter suggestions that you have been with and liked i would like to hear them as well.
    Thanks
    JT

Every state has the opportunity to shoot a whitetail in the 140 range....I would be looking at Mississippi, Ohio, Illinois, North Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska, etc....any state that you want to go to....why not Texas?

Texas is too expensive; I am happy with an (relatively) inexpensive Hill Country lease as a weekend getaway, and I will never pay $ to shoot a high fenced unnatural deer. I also think it would be cool to hunt in Oct./Nov. in one of those states where it gets cold and really feels like fall. There's something about hunting the edge of a corn or wheat field in 30 degree weather with the leaves turning that really gets me going. I also think those big bodied Northern deer are beautiful, majestic bucks, a little different than the pencil necks we have down here.

Texas was always my dream state to hunt, but ive seen a lot of big deer come out of Iowa, Kansas, and Illinois. All of them are on my new dream list. The truth is there are big deer nearly everywhere, but you got to put time and or money to consistently see them, let alone get them within bow range.

X2 i really just want to go up north and hunt the rut. Up there you can tell when the rut is and it feels like the rut. here in texas there could be 3 ruts and you never know when it might be.

Go to Boone& Crockett and Pope & Young and look for county/state statistics.

Like I've said before lots free range B&C come from West Virginia Just north of Bristol Virginia. This is a 2004 link but its getting better. Lots of Federal Land. Can Google scout and get on some deer if you have enough time to do yourself.

How much time you have depends on whether you get a guide or not.

I try and go for 1 week every year just for horns. My Best Friend lives in Va and scouts for me and we setup together. Next year I'll be 6 hrs away so I'll scout and hunt exclusively there for the first 3 weeks then hunt local.

here are 180-190's checked in on a frequent basis. Like I said ARCHERY ONLY COUNTY!!! We hunted Wyoming County two years ago and SAW a 180 taken out. Didn't go this year I'm looking for my first 150+ and you gotta go where the genes are.

Illinois is hard to argue with. I've never hunted there, but a buddy kill a 210" last year for a very reasonable price (a couple thousand all in travel included).
