    Custom Mesquite Mantle

I thought some of you might get a kick on a mantles that I made for our new to us home. We started out picking the slabs from a local just down the road from our house. After some haggling we made out with 2 slabs for the 2 fireplaces we have. One about 3" thick and the other just over 4" thick. I peeled the bark, and then started the sanding. I have about 40 hours in these and still not quite done with the last one. The wood is then white washed to make it look old and then sealed eith Matte Polyurethane to keep it looking "natural". Anyway here are a few pics and I will update as I get the other finished. Let me know what y'all think.

Looks nice . How did you mount/attach to the wall ? I`m sure they are not real light ( weight )

On the one I did so far, I screwed in 6" long lag bolts, drilled holes in slab and filled with epoxy and put it on. Then I put two small finish screws underneath into the header for a little extra.

Looks great. We're the slabs kiln dried for moisture and bugs?

Yes they are kiln dried, if not they will crack really bad. Also, I forgot to mention, I filled all cracks etc with epoxy.
