    Any Heat/AC unit experts here?

Today was the first time I've turned on my heat and I just now noticed a constant clicking noise coming from the unit outside. It's about 2-3 clicks a second.

As soon as I switch it off or to cool it goes away.

    Any ideas?

Edit: I have turned the heat off for now by the way. I don't remember hearing a clicking noise earlier this morning when I initially turned it on.

Sounds like your not getting gas to the igniter. It keeps trying to ignite the gas but there isn't any.

Well if it's the outside unit, I hope there ain't gas out there. That wouldn't be good.

If it's the outside unit (condensor), it could be a reversing valve solenoid. I've heard them chattter like that. If it is the inside unit (air handler) Cajun is right there. Igniter could be trying to light. But it will only try three times before it locks out and throws an error code. Need a few more specifics to really help over the internet.

What specifics are you looking for?

If it is a heat pump system I would suggest you turn your thermostat to emergency heat for now until you get somebody to look at it because the heat pump isn't something that a typical homeowner can diagnose!
          Just my two cents

Do you have gas to your home?

            Propane or natural gas?

Gas or electric system? Is it the outside or inside unit for sure. Just confusion on here most likely. Make/model would help but most units are the same.

It's electric. Positive it's the outside unit. I walked out to it to verify that's where the ticking is from.

Ok. Just wanted to clarify. Probably the reversing valve solenoid. That's something you can't fix yourself so call someone in. Could be the contacter chattering also.

                      What brand is the unit?
                      Is the outside unit running?
Does it seem to be heating properly?

90% of brands are default heat, meaning that the reversing valve is energized in cooling mode, not heating mode, so unless you have a Ruud/rheem product, it probably isn't the reversing valve.
