    Garage door opener question

Two years into my 15 year old house the chain drive opener is acting up. Guessing it was original to the house. I've been wanting to upgrade to the type that comes with a wifi connection so I can close it with a phone app anyway. Tonight looking at the door was the first time I noticed my spring is not connected at all. It's the overhead single coil style. The door is not heavy to me but I think perhaps not having any spring assist has worn the motor out. I got to poking around the opener and when I took the covers off the motor was really hot. It started working again but I'm not sure how much longer I have.

So my question is regarding the lack of a spring connection and if that is normal? Do I need to get a door guy out here before I upgrade to the next opener?

I'm no garage door expert but if the door isn't working correctly cause some of the parts are broken or missing I would contact a garage door guy before putting in a new opener. Hate to see you put a new opener in for it to burn up cause the door isn't working right. Just my opinion.

Get the spring fixed first. The opener could last a day or 10 more years. The spring broken will deffintly shorten motor life.

Agree. Have it looked over first. Might be a simple, cheap fix. Otherwise, it's not that hard to replace the drive train yourself. I had never done it and it only took me half a day to do it.

Spring is not broken, just not connected. No cables and no sign that it was ever hooked up.

I'll PM you my number. Send me some pics of your problems & I'll see if I can help you out. I have a door company in Tomball & run a few installers all over town.
