Well just wrapped up my five day mule deer hunt. It was my first time hunting in this unit. It has been hot so we started out at a higher elevation >10k. Had a shoot on a shooter the first AM that I missed shooting short range at a steep downhill angle. Right over the deer. My hunting buddy also made the same type of shot and missed as well on another deer.
We were working our way trough areas of the unit we had scouted. Lots of other hunters including packs of hounds in about every direction. Decided to check another more isolated area of the unit we had scouted previous and I killed this little meat buck that first evening. We were hiking up to a elevated spot to finish the evening glassine for the next morning. A bachelor herd of five bucks was in the thick brushy wash directly below us and they spooked out opposite to us on the top side of the hill. I got this one just as they were fixing to be on the downward side of the other hill. One of the bucks was a bit larger than this, one was about the same and the other two were smaller.
My buddy could never get a shot at the bigger buck.

The buck was infested with deer ticks on his chest.
The success rate in this unit for the second rifle is about 20% so not ever hunting this unit before and the temps still being in the mid sixties I'm pretty happy with the results.
I think one of our hunt crew members is pretty much done hunting. He has let his old lady control him and she has appeared to have won that battle for now. He did not put much into the hunt, spent most of the time texting with her and left camp early the third afternoon.
We worked hard to get a shot for the other buddy and he did take a couple of more longer range shots without success.
Seen way more elk than I wanted to while spotting. Even got pretty close to a smaller 300 class bull.
It was mid 60's the whole hunt with a super moon. I'm use to it being much cooler at least for a couple of days of the hunt. Last seasons hunt in the Corona area it was 8 degrees on the second morning of the hunt.
Still had a fun time and will put in for this unit again. Maybe for elk also.

A small group of elk a very long ways off.
