    Any Wildlife Biologists on TBH?

I am a Junior in High School and I'm thinking about majoring in wildlife biology. I interested in getting some opinions and suggestions from some people in that field. If you don't mind, just give me a brief description of your jobs and what you like and don't like about them.

    Thanks, Kanyon

What do you want to do? I was not a Wildlife Biology major but I did receive a B.S. Degree in Ecology and Env. Studies.

College was very expensive for me. Heard anything about that on the news?

I contemplated continuing my education so I could be a research biologist but decided I needed to not get deeper in debt and to start building my career. I had a career in Oil and Gas environmental consulting for 10 years (more or less.. long story) before going back out on my own for the second time about 6 months ago.

For what it is worth, if I had it to do over again I would have been a business major. Enjoying the outdoors and hunting and fishing are still my favorite pastimes but working and competing in business can be a lot like hunting.

All I can say is be ready for a slim job market. I'm in fisheries and there are people with phds and masters degrees fighting over jobs that pay less than $40k a year.

If it was me and I got to hit the redo button... Major in a Ag Business degree with a minor or associates in Range or wildlife management. 90% of the managers I knew that were on the better leases or ranches got their degree this way.

Basically 10% of the stuff you'll do is the cool stuff everyone dreams of only doing 90% is office/business related in some shape or form.

If I had to do it all over again, I'd of pursued my wildlife biology degree.. I'm a geologist and while I love geology, my passion is the great outdoors..

There are hundreds of degree plans with this same problem. Very likely to spend up to 100k on a degree with little to no job prospects or jobs where you cant make enough to pay for student loans or at least pay yourself back.
Get a degree in something that actually has jobs available or pays good enough to easily pay back the cost of tuition.

Sadly this. You will need to do it because you love it.

In all honesty you should look into New Mexico game wardens or any other states as well.
Get a regular criminal justice degree and apply for that type of job.
Lots of time in the country and with NM i believe they get to do studies, transplants of wildlife and probably lots of interesting stuff

I am. Got my degree in Animal Science and Wildlife Management. Been doing it for 16 years in everything in the private sector from deer breeding operations, fisheries management, commercial and private hunting operations and consulting. Worked for NWTF as a biologist for a while until our recent move took me out of the area I had to be in. Now working with Texas Forest Service actually starting tomorrow. Lots of good and bad, but that's just about any job. Private sector pretty well consumes 90% of your time, especially weekends and holidays. Public sector has a lot of benefits for better schedules and actual benefits and retirement. Lot of things I wish I might have done different, and a lot I don't....
