While most of you were headed to hunt Breezy and myself were headed to hunt sharks on the surf with the famous Oz. We met Oz on Friday morning at 9am. Due to the unusual extremely high tides lately the plan was to hit the beach at low tide so that we could have a smooth ride headed south. Well it was indeed a smooth drive. We averaged 30mph the whole way. We went way south and found a nice high spot that would keep us dry. The guts were really deep as well which was nice.
We quickly got setup and got to work. Well, from that point on it was crazy. We had none stop action bringing in sharks, big stingrays, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and skipjacks. The surf was gnarly so no long drops were ran out. We casted most shark baits out and Oz ran out a couple bigger baits to the deep end of the first gut. He reached as far down as he could with his paddle and couldn't touch bottom so that gut was pretty deep. That Friday night we had us some cross cut beef ribs with a side of sausage. The night was breezy and we also had a shower that sent us into our truck for cover. We still managed some good sleep though.
The next day brought the same conditions but with slightly bigger swells. At sunrise the jackfish were tearing up the bait near shore so we quickly went after them landing three around 20lbs. The winds tried to lay down but the swells stayed up making the 2nd bar hard to get over so short drops and casted baits it was. It didn't matter though cause it was action packed all day catching all the same species as the day before. Late evening Oz decided to try and run a big bait over that 2nd bar. It was gnarly but he timed it right and got through dropping a half jackfish about 400 yards out. All other baits were dropped short.
That Sat night produced a nice shark early and a big run late in the night on the half jack bait but no hookup. The rain stayed away and we slept good. Today Sunday morning conditions were perfect. We got after it shortly after day break. No jacks to be found but the sharks wanted to play again. The casted baits were getting hammered by sharks. Early this morning we noticed one of the long drops got pumped a few times. Oz thought there could be a smaller shark on the line but with such a big bait and weight he wasn't doing much. Well I reeled it in and it turned out to be the laziest and biggest shark of the weekend. It was a very fat 6.5' bull shark.
We decided to pack up around 11:30 this morning with a big catch total for the weekend. Oz runs Ocean Epic Adventures and it was EPIC for sure. Are total was.....
20 sharks up to 6.5'
3 big jackfish around 20lbs
2 big stingrays up to 100lbs
2 spanish mackerel
2 bluefish
1 keeper redfish
We had over 30 sharks runs. Lost and broke off a few. Crazy amount of action. Breezy, glad you experienced an epic surf fishing trip. This is one of those trips that just keeps you going back for more. We may never beat this weekend but we'll for sure try too.
