Questions on picking my sons first rifle

My son just turned 9 a few months ago. He is a good shot with his high power pellet gun a 22 and crossbow. Now I think it's time for his first deer rifle. I've debated getting him a 243 or 7m-08 . In either a youth bolt action or a single shot. A friend of mine even suggested a 44 mag in a rifle or a rifle with a muzzle break. What are yalls thoughts and experiences.

    .243 is hard to beat

I bought my son a single shot youth 243 and I could not get it to group any better than about 8" at 100 yards. After spending more on ammo trying to figure it out than I did on the gun I bought a youth model savage bolt actiion 243 with the accu trigger. It shoots lights out, came with a weaver scope for $370 and a certificate for half off a full size stock when he outgrows the youth one. It shoots sub MOA using Hornady Custome Lite reduced recoil ammo. I would definitely recommend it.

He hasn't yet had an opportunity to shoot a deer with it...our lease has proven to be exactly like what you describe yours to be in your profile but we love being out there.

A lot choose .243. For a beginner more bullet surface and weight can't hurt. Anything 6.5mm or 7mm-08 would be a good choice. Not a lot more recoil than a .243

Both my 8yr old daughter and 10yr old son have 7mm-08 and love them. One has the savage axis and the other the Ruger American. For the money you can't go wrong with either of the 2 but I will say the savage axis has a harder trigger. I started them both out on an H&R 243 single shot but I would recommend the bolt action over single shot due to the safety aspect.

Rem 700 in .260! He will carry it for years, Trust me. When your dead and gone his grand kids will be shooting it and being taught to take care of that rifle.

Remington 700 youth .243 all the way. Let him shoot it for a couple of years then you can rebarrel/chamber it and put a full size stock on it for whatever short action caliber you want. He then can shoot it the rest of his life-

At 10 I shot a savage .243 with accutrigger and it was amazing. Got my first deer with that gun, would still have it if our house hadn't got broken into.

                    Everybody needs a 243

I have both. There is a difference in recoil. I'd start the kiddo on 243

Both of my boys started with 243's handed down from my wife & I.

But if I were buying I would go 7-08

I started with .243 and killed plenty of deer with it. Guided two of my nephewa to their first deer with it and hopefully in a few years my daughter will use it.

Both of my girls shoot my 6mm that I was given when I turned 9. It's still my go-to whenever I put the bow away.

I gotta savage axis in .243 for my truck/hog/doe gun. And that little dude cuts holes at 100 yards. I shoot reloads. And its light weight. The trigger stinks as its kinda hard to pull. But ima take mine in and see if a gun shop can fix that

Been looking and researching lately for my daughter. She is very small framed. The .243 with hornady lite ammo is slightly more recoil than a .223.

I've wanted and finally shot a .243 with a break on it... wow. Less than a .223
Both combined would be like a loud BB gun.

Like the 7mm-08 too, but ammo in my area is harder to find and if they want to shoot just to shoot.... I want em to shoot

Bought a Caldwell dead shot field pod on sale last week, just to have for young hunters, so weapon weight ain't an issue. Wife shoots a 700 youth in 243 anyway
